A Californian in Shanghai

I am an amateur spear fishing enthusiast trapped in Asia. There is no spear fishing where I live so I am looking to get out of Shanghai for a few days and spear some fish. I would like info on any spots for spear fishing in China, Vietnam, Thailand, etc. I started spear fishing in Orange County California and primarily used a sling and never got into water more than fifty feet. Mostly reefs. Can anyone suggest a few places that are cheap enough and preferably a little out of the way and warm. Also since I do not have any of my gear I will need to know of places that rent out what I will need.

I have no clue what he's about now, but you can try sending him a personal message: maybe it will be a shot in the dark, but anyway it's for free.

Those were just the first names to come to mind. But your location is quite eccentric. They make spearguns in China, but they don't seem to use it.....

I'm another American in Asia! Though I'm over in Korea. I'll actually be heading down to Thailand in about 3 weeks to train with Sanso. Can't wait! If you're in the area at the time I'd love to learn a bit about spearing as well.

There are spearos and some nice dive spots in Taiwan... You have to borrow a gun from someone there thou.

Philippines and Indonesia would be better spots than Thailand, where most of the Islands are in marine parks and spearfishing is not allowed in those...

This post is dead... I know. But still, I think since people may come across it from a search, I should point out that spearfishing is illegal in China. Having a speargun here is illegal, so don't plan on spearing if you are heading here.
I know because I live in Shanghai and it's a pita since I have to leave my guns with friends in Thailand. So, even if I wanted to go to e.g. the Philippines or Korea to spear, I would have to head to Thailand first.
BTW, even having a bb gun is illegal. I guess Beijing is afraid of the armed masses...;-)
