well my buddy in Northern Cal. is going abalone diving one of these days. The last time he went I was out there and ate those things for the first time, yummy....

Anyway I've talked him into mailing one across country and wanted to know if anyone has had success or failure in this endevour before.

I was thinking maybe alive packed w/ ice all around (seperated w/ bags to keep the fresh water away) or completely frozen in shell and packed w/ ice.

I know they mail live clams, lobsters, crabs etc so this should be do-able.

Good question. I don’t know the answer, but I heard that abalone endangerment is becoming a real sensitive issue. I think I read that the entire California coast was now closed to harvesting, except for the north coast, which they are trying to close. I would check to make sure there aren’t any restrictions in place on the shipping of them. Seems like this was an issue, because the recent increase in demand for abalone was causing over quota and size harvesting issues in northern California.

Not sure on the legality of it, but a "friend" I know of who has a shipping contract with Airborne Express shipped abalone to Maryland(Odenton/Crofton & Annapolis), so PM me if you have any questions Deft ;)

He lives up north where harvesting is allowed (North of the mouth of SF bay). He and I also both have abalone report cards. these entitle you to take up to 24 per year during the season (roughly spring to fall minus july).

I also believe the restrictions would allow him to harvest three per day and allow me to be in possesion of one if we both marked it on our cards.
