Good evening fellow freedivers, i have a question that has popped up regarding whether or not a unqualified freediver is allowed to participate in a AIDA or CMaS sanctioned competition. Unqualified being someone that has not completed either a SSI , AA or PA freedive course. I look forward to your input. Thanks!

I have only competed in one AIDA comp and pretty much no one was certified. (AIDA safety protocols were followed etc. - just the divers had no certification).

Why in the world would anybody think that being "qualified" or "unqualified" is in any way related to having taken a freediving course?

I don't envy the organizers of competitions, they need to be able to winnow out the dangerously incompetent, but how? A blanket requirement for some kind of "certification" sure won't do that.

I'm a very strong supporter of the notion that every serious freediver should take a good course, but don't turn it into something equivalent to a scuba "c" card.
