i was doing my O2 tables and about half way through one of my breath holds i could hear and feel air comming up from my abdomin into my throat. i swallowed the air and just kept at it. it happened about 4 or 5 times. can somebody tell me whats going on and if i should be concerned about this?

I find the the muscles I use to "hold the air in" get tired on tables, and longer holds. Sometimes I alternate between holding the air in with my throat muscles, and holding it in just by keeping my mouth closed (essentially opening the airway between mouth and lungs. Practice helps, I don't have as much trouble with air escaping anymore. You'll probably find that you don't have this problem in the water due to the outside water pressure - unless you pack a lot.

I have this exact same problem when holding my breath, except in my case its caused by subclinical paralysis.

Also, if lean over to the side (while standing up and breathing normally) the air escapes with a loud hiss

quoting JennyWren: play switching air to you mouth and back, it's also good for me to concentrate on something else that is not time

You are holding too much air in your lungs. Let out some air.
hmm...
- take smaller breath before hold--> ok, i agree
- let air out during your hold, especially near the end --> absolutely no: your O2 is low at that time and this way you lower it again, however it might work good if you're looking for a BO or samba :head

Yeah I meant take in a smaller amount of air. Good that you clarified though, others might have misinterpreted and done the second.
