Hey gang,

Long time reader, but I've never posted. I've read people mention "air restriction devices," but I can't seem to find any details about what they are, or how to use them. Are they a home-made contraption, or something you buy? Are they used to restrict the inhale, or the exhale? Are they actually helpful? Any clues would be great.

As background, I'm a longtime freediver who hopes to increase his bottom time. Been using the O2 tables and breath-hold walks recently with some success. Thanks for any insight you can provide!

From what I understand it increases lung strenth and capacity. It basically makes breathing harder so it puts strain on the lungs. Search the net for respitory trainer or breath trainer that should give you some hits. Thats about the sum of my knowledge about it, which is not much. So goodluck :)

I made my own ARD. It works by allowing less air in and out of each breath, it is like taking small breaths with hard lung pulls. I made mine using a old snorkel mouthpiece with duct tape on the ends. I used a pen to punch a small hole in the side that would have the snorkel in it. The smaller the hole the harder you must breath.

hope that helped!
