matrixed82 .. that was a good one .. !!

I've got one that is much simpler in logic .. ;)

A man at the middle of the night heard the noise of his neighbor coming back from the bar (drunk as usual), so he went out to talk to him as he was fed up with it, so he approached him and advised him gently on why he would go on doing such a bad thing, the drunk man looked at him and said: Please tell me, if we put two baskets, one filled with water, the other one filled with wine, and got a thirsty donkey, from which one do you think he would drink? the neighbor said: I'm pretty sure from the water. The drunk shouted: Exactelly!! coz he is an ass !

Now, let us go back to the interresting news of Erik .. :)

Now this is really promising to human health issue, specially in regard to illness of the elders (memory problems) If scientists could find someway to reproduce brain cells and make it function properly (which is not proved yet).
Now, regarding alcohol effect on the nervous system in general and the brain cells in particular (making it reproduce) .. please read the article in ScienceDaily :

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/11/041108015734.htm

What do you understand?

Did you read this: "We have shown a burst in new cell birth that may be part of the brain's recovery after the cessation of alcohol."

Also read: "Chronic alcoholism, a disease affecting more than 8 percent of the adult U.S. population, or more than 17 million Americans, produces cognitive impairments and decreased brain volumes, both of which are partially reversed during abstinence."

This is an excellent study Erik, it just doesn't say anything about using alcohol in reproducing fresh brain cells (as you have suggested), it just says that there is hope for alcoholics to recover partially there brain cells quantity and quality if they quit drinking and get suitable treatment .. :)

specially if we read this (for the same Dr. Kim Nixon) :

http://www.jointogether.org/news/research/summaries/2001/binge-drinking-hinders-brain.html

Except if you have another study that you are getting the information from, or maybe you have this same study but with more details, then please give me the link.

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink
I feel shame Then I look into the glass and think
about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes
and dreams . If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out
of work and their dreams would be shattered.
Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their
dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."
~ Jack Handy

WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may leave you wondering what the hell
happened to your bra and panties.

on a similar vein,

There are many reasons to drink,
And one has just entered my head,
If a man can't drink when he's living,
how the hell can drink when he's dead

Cupbearer, it is morning, fill my cup with wine.
Make haste, the heavenly sphere knows no delay.
Before this transient world is ruined and destroyed,
ruin me with a beaker of rose-tinted wine.
The sun of the wine dawns in the east of the goblet.
Pursue life's pleasure, abandon dreams,
and the day when the wheel makes pitchers of my clay,
take care to fill my skull with wine!
We are not men for piety, penance and preaching
but rather give us a sermon in praise of a cup of clear wine.
Wine-worship is a noble task, O Hafiz;
rise and advance firmly to your noble task.

Hafiz

Hafiz was a Sufi (mystic Islam) poet- my favourite in fact. He sometimes referred to alcohol and taverns in analogy to God and enlightenment.

My personal belief is that when we put a chemical in our bodies to alter reality, we are looking for spiritual enlightenment- as chemicals will bring a sense of pleasure/well-being, while masking negative aspects of our lives. Occasionally I will have a half glass of wine or a beer if I'm out dancing, but it's an extremely rare occasion. I would not drink even 1 beer the night before I was going out diving. I like feeling what's happening 100%, even if it's a bad experience. Every moment of my life is precious (and irretrievable in our 4 dimensional existence) and must be treated with reverance.

But that is for ME. Enjoy your lives in whatever way seems to make you happy. :inlove

Alsalamu alaikum,
Erik Y.

I can't help being struck by the wonderful coincidence. Here we have this thread where even moderate consumption of alcohol is being condemned, and in the last couple of days on Spearboard there is a thread about the Hell Divers Rodeo, a spearfishing competition on Louisiana.

As is usual, the first reports were about how wonderfully drunk they were at the weigh-in and awards ceremony. They always seem to proudly mention this before they ever get around to mentioning the fish. There are accounts of who passed out, who threw up, who grabbed at women, and these are matters of pride, not something just sheepishly mentioned with any regret or remorse.

I admit to being turned off at that stuff, while it seems others are turned off by even the amount of drinking I do.

I guess it truly is relative.

Beautiful, Erik. But the ancient Roman poets put it much shorter:
Vinum bibant homines, animalia cetera fontes

"Let the humans drink wine, to animals the other sources"

Catullus, 1st century bC

Oh yes .. *thinking deeply* .. yes .. yes .. if ever we find a cure for all wars in the world, we should think twice before applying it .. just think about the soliders of all nations (either fighting for good or otherwise, doesn't matter) .. and think about their families, think about their dreams that would be shattered .. of my God, we'd rather keep the war on .. 100s of milions will be safe, their dreams will become true .. no, don't think about the rest of the world (the billions) .. ofcourse I shouldn't .. why should I .. Jack Handy didn't !!!!!!! .. by the way who is Jack Handy ?! .. :D

"24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not."
~ Stephen Wright (not Whelan!)

Coincidence ?! .. ofcourse not .. it's a conspiracy ! rofl

Oo! .. :chatup

Ooooh! Erik .. you've set my emotions on fire .. what a poem .. lovely .. :)

I found out that it's as difficult to make westrens to grasp indirect expressions as it is to make eastrns grasp the direct ones .. :D

How many of the readers would understand what is this poem about? even after your hint :" He sometimes referred to alcohol and taverns in analogy to God and enlightenment." .. well, I think they should know also that the "sometimes" you are talking about are the only times when he mentioned alcohol and taverns at all.

How many would know what Hafiz is efering to when he said:
"Wine-worship is a noble task, O Hafiz;
rise and advance firmly to your noble task." ?

Anyway, sometimes it takes a worshiper alot of thoughts to get into the mood, specially when it's dawn time prayers .. :D .. if you get what I mean

spaghetti .. Hi .. how are you .. :)

Scusi, but I didn't get the relationship between Hafiz poem and the Roman one ? .. according to Hafiz, all creatures of the world have to drink wine till they die off drunk .. :)

I meant that the words used could be used for different analogies- not that there ever was not an analogy. ie: 'wine' or 'drink' having the same end meaning.
But maybe I presume too much? I wasn't there... maybe he was drinking rofl

Peace,
Erik Y.
