:wave:wave:waveThis is my first post so greetings to all. I'm a professional diver currently out in Kuwait. I love fishing spear or rod and am having some moderate success out here in Kuwait. The best fish with a spear so far is an 18" Malamar Grouper. I baged four in a dive earlier this week all between 14" & 16" (my buddy Gill has my video/pics on his card when I see him again I'll download them to my laptop and post them). I caught some Macrel last weekend on my light rod using 1" silver swim shad and then switching it up to live minnows. These regretably were also small. I fish and dive with a solid bunch of guys who are also pro divers: Humberto aka Berty and Cavanaghi aka Cav both of whom are spearos and are slowly adopting line and rod fishing when we can't get in the water. I have a beautiful wife and daughter back in the US and we have a house in Virginia on the Chesapeke where I get out and do a lot of casting and trolling. VA beach and Hatteras are the two closest spots back home where there are good fish to go after when you're spearfishing. However, Berty is from Puerto Rico and we are planning a dive trip back to his home turf to get some serious blue water action on. Well that's more than enough about me I hope to learn from everybody out there, if you're in the middle east shoot me a line, if you're not.....shoot me one anyway! I got to go we're on the water by 8am tommorrow (Pray for a huge Grouper!!!).
Later all,
Ski

Correct me if Im wrong but that pic looks an aweful lot like tunnels beach on Kauai.:D :D If so your standing about 200 yards away from a huge ulua cave! Thats where I grew up, did you get to do any diving there?:)

Wow!! I didn't think anyone would read this! To Erik thanks, Foxfish I'll keep writting, Podge I'm enjoying it already, and Blaiz yes you are correct that is Kaui indeed the North Shore the Bali Hai in the background. We went out at 8 like planned and then came back and went out again at 2. The best fish was my friend Berty who took a mid 20" Macrel. I can't tell which kind it is exactly, as I am not familiar with most of the varieties/variations of fish which inhabit the waters of Kuwait, but it looks very similar to a Spanish Macrel back home. It is silver with blue spots, and we know it cooks up great in a beer bater served with grilled pineapple!! I have pictures of the outing and the cookout, again I can't post because they're on my friends camera. Yes, I know I need a camera, one thing at a time; I just got some new fins (Cressi 3000 LD's Yeahhh!). I got to go, I'm getting up in 6hrs. If anyone has any tips on increasing your breathold I'm all lungs, I mean ears. I've started carrying weights underwater in a pool that's 16' deep and 25yards long. Will this help? More to follow.......
Later,
Ski

Hey Blaiz,
You are right on man it is Kaui on the North Shore. My wife grew up on Kaui and we meet and got married when we both lived out on Oahu. Our daugter was also born on Oahu. We still have friends and family back in the islands and it would be our dream to move back and live there. I like your quote: Sometimes it's hard to think of a reason to come back up. The Big Blue, classic. Drop me a line I'll get back to you in a day or two. Also, my first name is John, but all my friends call me Alex.
-Later.

I'm digging this site! I've already sent out some emails and it's mind blowing the kind of names you've got on this joint eg Daryl Wong.... Holy Cow Batman!!! I would have never guessed that people who are so well known would put themselves out there into a public forum. Truly I am amazed and also humbled by the fact that they are so passionate for this sport and lifestyle.

Thanks for writting back to my post!! We went and it wasn't happening in the morning; too much boat traffic and noise. But, in the afternoon it was game on. I shot an 18" Malamar Grouper (It has yellow spots on it), and three reef fish I could not distinguish. My buddy Berty shot a beautiful mid 20" Macrel, it was delicious. I unfortunately also shot a huge pufferfish. I dropped down to about 35' and waited on the baitfish to settle hoping another school of Macrel would be hitting them and I saw what I thought was a giant Malamar Grouper..... I was wrong. I took it right at the gills and when I hit it it balloned. When I got it to surface it was swollen in the stomach and I knew it was done. We took a pic and then I gave it back to the sea. I'd like to think it made it, but I know where I hit it and it was game over. Regretable, but I'll have my eyes opened wider next time. I have pics of our cookout that night, when I bug my friend Erik enough he'll send them to me and I can post them; Until then I'm still camera less. Write me a line if you have any tips on increasing your breath hold?

Do some searches for breath-hold tips amigo. Be very careful in the water if you're training- make sure you have a spotter and don't push too hard. Do static training on your couch- 3 or 4 in a row with a few minutes relaxed breathing in between and you might surprise yourself. Don't do that in the water though.
When you're actually diving, try to be as relaxed as possible- put your mind into all the muscles in your body and consciouslly let them relax. Move gracefully-as slowly and as little as possible. Try some aspetto to wait and see what shows up for dinner, but be careful and remember that hunting is external- meaning it's easy to lose awareness of your limitations!
Lastly, there are much better hunters on this forum than me... seek them out.
Salam,
Erik

Thanks for the insight Erik. I can internalize what you are saying about seeing my body, and consciouslly being aware of what you are actually doing with every movement. I went to the pool again at lunch, with my buddy Erik (who has half my pics on his camera), and did more underwater weight laps. We spot each other by surface swimming over the working person as they go back and forth. I went out into the ocean for :15 tonight and cracked the keeper for my shaft. I'm going to have to super glue it and then tape it until I can order a newone. I will be careful not to lose my focus and let myself become complacent with my own safety. Sometimes I feel like I can stay underwater indefinitely. Tonight after the gym I'm going to dedicate :20 to static training, I'll also look for some additional training tips. On an off note I see you have a Calvin and Hobbs "Spaceman Spiff" cartoon as your icon, are you a fan of Bill Waterson? Take it easy.

I agree, he rocks! I went to a small school in Ohio called Kenyon, Bill also went there; He just went about 20 years before me. I found someone on DB that is going to do a static test. Her ID was Sam and there was a plethora of info in regards to training. One thing that I found interesting was running and holding your breath. I had never heard of this before...... I'm going to try it. Later,
Alex.

I love DB! Everytime i'm on here I learn something new or I meet somebody who shares my passion for the ocean. I thought that I was kinda out on my own, and honestly it was depressing. But, my friend showed me this site and it's like I tapped into a world where everybody felt the same way I did. It's like being seperated at birth and then finding your family after you've grown up.
Later,
Alex.

Ski,

Welcome to DB, It sounds like you are finding your way around pretty well.

There is a ton of great information to be had and many very experienced divers and hunters to learn from.

I know what you mean about seeing Daryl write in. He is very friendly as are most of the people on this site.

O yeah, the apena training of running while breath holding can cause skinned up foreheads and broken noses. rofl If your gona try this keep it in the grass of sand.

good luck

Joel

Too late....I already went apnea running tonight!! Although I didn't eat S#@! I could definately see myself doing a face plant somewhere in the future. I kept it pretty low key a 2 mile warm up, 1 mile of apnea running, and 1 mile of cool down. I alternated street lights, hold from one to one then breath between two. I felt tense at first but I relaxed the more I got into it. I see you are a hunter, what type of gun do you have? I am currently using a 75cm Immersion and the component parts are junk. The gun itself is solid, but the the shaft, tip, keeper, and flopper are garbage. My friend Berty swears by Riffe and will only by their guns. Got any suggestions as to a quality spear gun in the 100cm range no more than $300 dollars?
Later,
DeepSeaSki aka Alex

ski,

I have a nasty addiction to gear (exactly word for word from my wife)

I have several RA's 80cm, 100cm and 120cm a 100cm rabitech a 90cm omer and a 57" Andre fully enclosed track (mid handle, teak) and I am ordering a 55"Wong GR gun today.

you can find a 100cm Ra or Rabitech in that price range.

So if you are ever in Southern California I have one you can borrowrofl

Good luck on the training. I like to use a static training table I picked up from one of the freediving forums.
Its a very cool tool.

good luck
Joel

Check out the new hammerhead evolutions. Already set up with an open muzzle w/two bands, and sapposidly very acurate guns. The best part is that they are very affordable:)

ski,

blaiz beat me to the punch, I neglected to mention HammerHead as an option.
I believe that they are about $270 fully set and ready to go. From your previous post it seems as your target species are smaller to med size reef fish.

the hammerhead would be a great option for you. The shaft is only 17/64 but I have heard that it is very strong for being a thinner shaft. But the reviews the guns have received in Haw skindiver are all great. I have actually swapped all my guns over to their open muzzle kit and they are great.

good luck

Joel
