I had to look for an alternative to a rubber weight belt, as I have wasted the second one. The reason is, because I am a bit overweight I have to pull the belt with 9kg's of lead quite tight otherwise it slips over my hips. It then starts to tear at the hole where the buckle is clipped in. I made up a belt with an old buckle, a piece of car safety belt and a short piece of 20mm spear gun rubber. After ±20hrs in the water I do not think I'll need to buy a rubber belt again.

A lot of people who dive in cold waters wear back harnesses and put their weights on their shoulders.
There are companies that make weight vests, which allow you to store usually from 6-12 lb of weight else where.
I know that people have made home made weight vest with nylon straps.

dlspearo, yours isn't a quick-release buckle. Not sure how important this is, I never had to dump my weight belt.
Personally I love the weight vest from tridentdivesystems.com.au it has quick-release which works really well (i've tested it multiple times) and their weights are designed specifically for the vest with a curve that fits your body perfectly. You can even add trim weights around the waist if you want to dial in distribution. I'm a working diver and spearfish on the weekends, they have configurations that work for both so it's perfect for me and holds up to 24kg of weight
