My previous speargun utilized a spear point where the flippers tucked into a holder. My new speargun has a single, unsecured flipper.

I've been noticing that the new gun is "off". I missed several nice fish at nearly point-blank range.... at first I thought I was making excuses, but I'm convinced that the spear isn't flying straight.

Ok... dumb question.... do I nead to secure the flipper down with a rubber band or something? Or can a dull point make the speargun that inaccurate???

Any other suggestions?

My gun is a rob allen.

hey i aint a good one to ask about this but i have noticed that my gun was shooting low and my gun as a adjusting guide on it and i can move the spear up or down i did notice that when i sharpened my tip it did improve alot but just a thought

That shouldn't make a difference as most of my guns have had a single flopper on them and it never effected my shot.

What will effect your aim is putting a bunch of huge bands on a gun and overpowering it. Changing a band out to something thinner would be my first guess at fixing it- other than just a lot of target practice.

hmmmm. it only has one band on it, so it isn't overpowered. maybe i need to practice with the new gun. Any suggestions for a target? something that won't damage the point?

Make a stryofoam target or get a square target with a center point. shoot at it from the same point - 3 times. and see what kind of group you get. do this several times and it tell you if the gun consistantly shoots high, low or where.

You can make a tagert out of low density foam. I don't know how to describe it. Kind of a plastic feeling stuff that "they" recently have startd using for packing electronics rather than styrofome. I've also seen 2 liter bottles used. Just put a string on a weight and tie it to the target.

I agree with Jon, the flopper and weather the point is perfectly centered won't effect it. Your gun prolly just aims a little different. I know when I tried Jon's Cyrano, I could not hit crap. I wasn't hitting anything with my gun at the time. Eventually, my shots came back. I was missing point black shots that day too.

Just curious, was it a constant miss? Like always low, high, left or right? Or at least always missing left or right or missing high and low?

If your going from a JBL to the R.A., you might be shooting high because the spear has less drop.

Get a piece of plastic snow fence and cut it into a 4'x4' square, Add floats to the top and weights to the bottom. Spraypaint the center square black. Now you have a really good reference point to how the gun will shoot. Every time you aim for the center, black, square you can count how many squares away your shot landed- the lie will go right through and hang up in that square. It will let you know exactly which way you need to alter your aim.

Even a single band can be too much if it's too thick. I've read speargun reviews where the things shoots like junk right out of the box, but after a few tweaks (which is mainly changing the bands) the accuracy improves quite a bit.

That RA you have is 10x better than that little JBL you were using. Probably just hafta get used to the gun...Most people say RA's are accurate and set up well right outta the box. Is your spear bent or something? Maybe jerking the trigger or even flinching?

I've gotten pretty good with my three band JBL. I'm USUALLY hitting fish where I aim IF they are within range. I do however miss on "gimme" shots once in awhile though! I think we all do! I have to kinda "arc" the shot if the fish is more than 8 feet away but I'm gettin good at it. Probably not the case with your RA though!

I'll be shooting a RA too come September!

I'm actually not sure how it is missing. The last shot it went high... The other shots happen so fast I don't know how I missed the fish. I'll come up with a target and try next time I get back in the water. (today?)

I'm inclined to agree that this is the most likely case. When I jumped from my old JBL Custom to my Teak Mid-handle, it took me a few weeks (of intense shooting) to get used to it. Missed countless "easy" shots. The JBL shot low, and over time I compensated - had to overcome that.

Now go back and try to shoot that JBL again.... you might wonder how you hit anything with it ever haha! I started with a few JBL's before getting a Euro gun and was forced to use the old gun once day... OMG it was f##king horrible.
