Another Portland Spearo BBQ

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

Unfortunately cant make it this weekend but try to get my act together and catch some action with you guys in the future, but I'll go fishing here locally and will post some pictures of some beatiful fish for you guys to envy..:p

Have good BBQ and catch some good fish to put in it too..:)

Shame you can't make it to the BBQ pekka.I'm sure one of us will shoot something worth while to eat.The pictures will no doubt appear on the forum just to show you what you missed. :waterwork rofl rofl

I'll do my best to give you guys a reason to come check out the spot I am targeting here at Exeter.. I am trying to figure out how to mount my camera to my gun or somewhere so I can get videos of my hunting technique and action shots of me nailing some beauties..:)
I'll train hard here and see you guys some time there for some action..

Pekka, best fish out of Portland so far this year was Bass just under 15lbs, unfortunately not by me!!!! And not by the man in the photo either I hasten to add!!! What size u getting in Exeter??

Buster lung, what were you shooting there?? mullet? very shallow water..
The fish I get here range from one kilo to all the way to about 10Kg, so anything is possible. last summer I got one of those big monsters perhaps not quite 10K but big enough to eat my other 1kg fish I got that day..
There are some mullet around as well.. I usually leave them alone.. they grow very big, but I dont shoot them just watch them swim..:)
I have some Mpeg footage of fish at Budleigh reef already just not the shooting of the fish.. perhaps this weekend I'll figure out some way of filming and shooting at the same time.. I cant use both hands because of heavy current...
I'll post pictures as I dive and if you can post mpeg's I'll send some for you to post on your web..

Mostly my fish weigh from 2pounds to 6pounds.. :) but perhaps tomorrow the big ones are about and wonder infront of my gun... looks like early high tide.. I'll opt for the eveningish dive around 16:00 or something around that region..
When do you guys find the fish in Portland high or low tide... incoming tide?
I'll post some pictures tomorrow from the trip hopefully get some video footage of shooting..

Exeter fishing weekend has begun.. with catch and some good footage of sharks and bass and bunch of other things that wonder about in the water. Had pretty good day out.
saw some mullet swim by as well, left them alone.. ended up diving without the gun for a bit only holding on to my camera... and landed in a middle of shoaling bass... could say I was missing my gun..:)
Later on I did manage to find two bass swimming by and the other was good enough to present shootable target.. 5pound bass was landed with ease.. :wave
Better stay out of water tomorrow though, bit sore throat and quality time with the girl who guards my stuff on the beach when I am out filming and shooting..

hope you guys are catching some good fish tomorrow and having as good weather as I had.. Best of luck to all you guys.

how did you guys do?? any fish in Portland? I had a BBQ here, not quite the same as to share stories with other spearos when fish cooks on the coals.. but it was ok.. How was the BBQ, many people. who claimed first prize?

A good turn out of spearos for the BBQ.Nice to see so many people from lots of different countries attend.A couple of bass were landed and plenty of fresh plaice was provided along with scallops and lobster(the advantage of scuba and depth) :p :p We all went spearing from the DUCK in the evening which was an experience all by itself.And yes the DUCK is of the green WW2 varioty.Some pictures were taken and i'm sure they will be posted soon.A big thanks to Buster Lung and Portland Oceaneering for arranging everything. :thankyou :thankyou :thankyou

Which species of shark did you get footage of Pekka??There was so much plankton in the water on saturday i was half expecting to bump into a basking shark.The sand eels and jelly fish seem to be enjoying it though.

I got footage of Lesser spotted dogfish, it was lying on the bottom as I was gliding over and I saw it and thought I'll take a closer look.. went right next to it with my camera filming all the way and as it took off I followed it around a bit..
If you catch me on messenger ask me to send the file over, seems to be working ok between finland and uk..
I did get an other chance to film these samll sharks.. but the first ime I was not filming..I forgot to push the button and just followed the shark around looking through tiny lcd and thinking how good footage I was getting... then at the surface noticed that I had not been filming at all.. was not happy bunny.

What underwater camera due you use Pekka?? I've had some great oppertunites to take some pictures including some cuckoo wrasse and five to six ballan wrasse under a large bolder just hanging around with the surface behind them.Nice to come back with some footage even if the stringer is empty.

I am using canon A85 with underwater housing from canon... gets very good quality shots.. I think, you can take a look at some pictures at DB Gallery, I have posted few there.. Wrasse is good subject for photos as they are very territorial and wont disappear as quickly as mullet and bass... and Dogfish is ideal as it does not swim that fast and lets you get close before moving..
I'll try to get a web page to upload my videos so you can take a look.. my aim is to generate enough quality material from my dives this summer to make small internet documantary on SW reefs... Dogfish is the first target. then wrasse as they are quite colourful and easy tardet... then moving on to bass and Mullet and perhaps some mackerel... if they appear like I have been told at the shore around 7pm..:)

you got some surface support... the bass at portland must have some vicious teeth! that would probapbly take care of GW.. and the diver with it if it was needed...:p
