Any good Freediving Magazines?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
that sounds about right Spaghetti, generally with mags (same here in aus for spearfishing) the money comes from the advertising, an international mag wouldnt have a problem with sponsors but it would probably have a problem with content to keep the majority of people interested however just for the fun of it what would we have in the mag?

Personally:

-index
-letters to the editor
-community news e.g. law changes etc
- upcoming competitions
- Interview with a freediver (someone well know each issue)
- tech article e.g no fins technique, EQ, pack stretching, line setup
- product review e.g new monofin, wetsuit, mask, etc
- new product page
- upcoming record attempts + current records list
- on location article recreational e.g diving the cod hole on the great barrier reef
- on location article competition e.g. Deans blue hole vertical blue comp
- photo gallery (readers submissions)
- club listing or for international mag country AIDA body contacts
etc

what does everybody think?

I wish there was something as well - I picked up a copy of SkinDiver when I was living in Hawai'i but it was all spearfishing, nothing appropriate for me (I have no interest in killing the fish that I'm hanging out with). I don't have a problem with there being magazines for spearos but I was hoping that at least one page wouldn't have a giant picture of a fish stuck on a stick and bleeding all over the place.

And now there is New Zealand Spearo:friday
Quite a good read with a good freediving section and contributors such as Will Trubridge. Only one issue so far but if you all subscribe then there are sure to many more!:wave

Here's the 4 italian mags (plus countless e-zines, websites and forum sites)

Pescare Apnea
Pescasub & Apnea
Pesca In Apnea
Blu Hunter
Thanks, Spago, I added the ones I missed to the Media Base, but did not find any website for Pescasub & Apnea (I just found a forum of the same name, and some websites mentioning the magazine). Don't you happen to have a link, so that I can add it too?

HSD accepts submitted articles. It started as a local mag and has grown. recently they have had more comp freediving related stuff. A problem with any mag is getting writers. Maybe some of these story ideas can be written and submitted to HSD. Like someone interviewing a few competitive freedivers and submitting the stories??

I'm have nothing to do with HSD, but it seems that rather than having a struggling mag that may be gone in a year, helping to increase the content of the ones that are around.

I'll have to check out the New Zealand mag now too. (the title looks very HSD like :))

EDIT: After looking at it a little, it looks like it was modeled after HSD, their site too. Not that it is a bad thing, just sayin. I'll have to consider it a little more, the Internation price is a bit high for me right now.

Yeah, there's an element of HSD in NZ Spearo. First issue has about a dozen pages dedicated to freediving, with stuff by Ant Williams, Fran Rose and Kerian Hibbs, plus an interview with Dave. Next issue has some stuff about training from Kathryn. Not a bad list of freediving contributors so far, I'm sure you'll agree!

Trux this is the link to the publisher's website (Adventuresub: they publish a scuba mag named "Sub" and Pescasub).
Hope this what you were asking for. :) Adventures S.r.l. > Home ( DNN 4.4.1 )

I have now received two issues of (Australian) Freediving & Spearfishing mag. In the last issue there was not a word about freediving, pure spearing (nothing against spearoes as long as they don't kill ONLY for a sport) and in the first issue there was one freediving related article (about Guillaume Néry). So by this far I'm very dissapointed about the contents of the mag which is named FREEDIVING & Spear Fishing. Ok, I took the risk when ordering the mag so it's not the problem of the Magazines editor... However I wonder why the name of the mag is like that cause it 99 % of spearfishing??? Is there a different meaning for a word "freediving" in Australia or why is that so?

Anyway, as Finnish speaking and English reading freediving enthusiast one purely freediving oriented, international mag in the world would be very nice to have! Though the freediving is a small sport I suppose there must be tens of thousands (guessing) enthusiasts worldwide and also I'm quite sure that it's possible to find one or two writers from every country who would like to write something about freediving scene in their own country. Then what we would only need is a one head editor to collect articles and put the mag together.

Ok, I know, that in a reall life it's not that simple, but anyway... :)

Freediving is not just the competitive diving. Spearfishing can be done freediving or on scuba. So if the Mag focuses on freediving I would assume you would not see any scuba gear. The amount of competitive freediving content would then very from issue to issue, same as HSD.

Ok, that explains the name of the mag.

However, because there are both words (Freediving and Spearfishing) and there hasn't been any scuba spearfishing articles on these mags I have, the name is a little bit confusing... But that's maybe only for me: Here in Finland we use term Freediving descriping any kind of diving without scuba equipment (also non competitive diving or "fun diving" wether it happens in a pool or open water). When we talk about spearfishing it usually means underwater fishing without scuba. And as far as I know there aren't many people here in northern Europe who spearfishes using scuba equipment (correct if I'm wrong). Ok, this isn't so important, just wanted to explain my "logic" with these terms ;)

I understand what your saying, but in some areas (many in the US) spearfishing with scuba is allowed, so people clarify by including freediving. That way people are not expecting to see scuba related stuff. I have not seen that mag, I just went and looked for it. I found it on Trux's site, but not the actual Mag's site. By that title I would expect more freediving only type stuff too.

This may not be what you want to hear, but I would suggest writing an article yourself. I also encourage others to write. That way the amount of material the magazine has increases and the more purely freediving stories that get published in these magazines. Even the stories here on DeeperBlue are few, but they are great once they get posted. I see that as the limiting factor, a small amount of quality contributions.

These are often smaller operations and they don't employ people who travel the world to search out the latest freediving news. Just my thoughts.

Yep bang on ILDiver the editor of the magazine International Freedivind and Spearfishing News is a friend of mine. and the mag is open to all stories equally however very few freediving stories are forwarded to the editor. stories from all over the world are included in the mag, this issue as far a field as Norway, South AMerica, South Africa, Australia of course etc.

there haver been articles on the New Zealand freediving seen as well as many others its just a fact that the majority of stories submitted are spearfishing and the majority of readers are spearos so the mag to be commercially viable must cater to the majority. i know Barry very well and he is always looking for Freediving stories to add to the magazine so if peoplehave stories please forward them to Barry he'll happily look at them and if they are good will publish them too.

Isnt paper "old school"?

Serious question, specially since freedivers are so few in comparison to spearfishers, and tightfisted in comparison to scuba divers. There are no money in it.

I think it is, but I still like mags. Probably from habit??? There is something about having the printed version.... I can read a story online and I'll still re-read it in a mag. I'm not sure what it is about them, I still love 'em

Paper obsolete? Shush, for God's sake, I work in paper press and you'll make me loose my job with spreading such imprudent statements ;-)

Anyway, the beauty of paper mags:
I've just bought issue number 2 of the new Pizza-land (italian) magazine "Pescare Apnea". It's much more about freediving than spearfishing:
-6 pages long interview with Michele Tomasi (CMAS DYN WC)
-10 pages long article on the history of competitive freediving
-6 pages article on Genoni's static on O2 18'04" performance
-6 pages on suggestions for pool training agenda
-8 pages article by Federico Mana about hyperventilation
-6 pages about what's going on in French freediving (Pierre Frolla and company)
-4 pages anticipations on 2009 vertical blue
-4 pages on physiopathology of breathing
-4 pages on "mental training"
-6 pages on trip suggestion "apnea trekking in Saudi Arabia"
-2 pages dummies guide: the do-it-yourself neckweight
-some good spearfishing articles (I enjoyed the article about hunting bluefin in Sardinia), short reviews of 60 spearguns...
TO RESUME:
If you could have this mag in english language, you'd love it! But it's in italian....

Well, Spago, so if they already have such rich content, try persuading them to employ you, and become the directing editor of the English version. All what you'd need to do is translating the articles (or letting them translate) - and I bet that the magazine would sell in sufficient volumes worldwide to pay for it.

BTW, I'd be quite interested in the article about hyperventilation. Don't you know if it is available somewhere online? (I doubt it is the case, though)

1-Good idea Trux. I'm loving my current job so far but I've been fancying about something like the idea you suggest for a long time now.

2-It's not online as far as I know, but I can send you the whole mag by mail if you wish (for free, of course) soon as I'm done with reading it (next week). As a francophone you may have a chance to read italian and understand: italian language is basically "rotten latin", or a simplified french...
