I am a spearfisherman from the UK (Devon to be precise) and I moved to Sweden 4 years ago. Ridiculously, spearfishing is illegal in Sweden (don't get me started, grrr), so I have been doing without for the past few years. Now I'm getting withdrawal symptoms and I need a fix.
I have been weighing up a few options.
1. Do it anyway. Probably not the best option, but I am getting a bit desperate!
2. Find flatties and take them by hand or with a knife. Still not strictly legal, but I can't really see what the problem could be and anyway, who is going to stop me?!
3. Travel up to Norway. It's only about 3 hours by road to reach the Oslo fjord, although I don't know if the spearfishing is any good there. Anybody know?
4. Take the ferry over to Denmark.
The only problem with going to Denmark or Norway is that I don't think it's legal to even own a speargun here, so what do Swedish spearos do about their equipment?
Lastly, if anybody is local to Gothenburg, please get in touch! Help a fellow fish-starved spearo in need ;-)
