anybody know what this is? (fresh water)

Lake Michigan - spotted resting on the bottom - I crept up with a meter but was right at 6 o'clock - so he bolted fast when he saw me. Since it wasn't interested or foraging I felt little chance of spotting it again but lucked out. Doesn't quite fit anything I've been able to find. Maybe 35-40cm.

Hey Fonduset!I see you changed your avatar. I.m not sure 100% but by the look of the scales i'd say it was in the carp family.

I've been working in the 'Carp, Whitefish, Sucker' range - with no joy so far. The dorsal fin a sort of hump shape are throwin me.

Could it be a species on buffalo carp? We have several species in Texas that resemble that fish. I did a google search, and the photos are quite similar.

If the images are 55-60 on your homepage (imageevent.com) then it looks like its a fresh water drum

I've shifted the images around . the image in question is now #120. I know it's a member of the Sucker family - but not one I've every seen around here before. Thanks for the link Jon. I've been using the Michigan DNR site - which is somewhat limited as to species.

It might be a northern pike minnow (used to be called squawfish) the way to tell would be to look at the mouth. Pike minnows have diffrent mouths than suckers do. Another thing that may aid you in your search is that the fish dosent have an adipose fin. Hope any of this info helps.

Not likely - this guy is about 18-inches long. I'm sure it's a member of the carpsucker family - just not sure which one. The coloration is a bit odd and the scales quite large. From it's behavior I'm also guess it may have been in poor health.
