BC Spearing Trip: Round 3 (2008)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Ideal for me is the second week of September because Guy is back in school then - which lightens the ambient load around here. But I'll try to fit in with what the masses decide. Sounds like an awesome trip - anyone have info so we can start putting numbers together?

I'd like to make an 'executive' decision so that we get closer to being able to book flights etc... how about August for sure. It seems that most can make that. If we can hone it down to a 2-week period that'll be the next step. Chris I missed you on the first one, and Connor we're also overdue for a 3D+time meeting.

The last week of August is the most likely one for me to get time off from work.

Cool, it'll be good to see you again Jimmy... anyone else?

Great stuff Colin. Your recent SWB experience makes me think that we should all try to adhere to a buddy system if agreeable. I wouldn't want be posting a thread on the loss of a friend at such a great event.

the only loss of life on this trip with be.... THE FISH!

grrrrr....rawr.... GRRRR!

Yeah I'm really looking forward to stalking huge Ling and small Halibut! Being able to take a batch home will be nice too.

Anytime in August is ok with me. Early is better, but whatever everybody can work with. Just pray for no hurricanes anywhere near take off time, and none later, either.

A few years ago, I was in the Bahamas diving and a big one was headed to Sarasota. My homebound wife was going nuts as I was the only one who knew how to get the shutters up and we discovered that a whole bunch of the hurricane supplies were on the boat with me. No planes were flying and there was no way for me to get home. Its the kind of thing that your wife does not let you forget.

Anybody have a clue as to how well a sling will work in the QCIs? I haven't shot my Sea Hornet in so long that I'd hardly recognize the trigger end.

August 4 (Monday) is a holiday I think. The one advantage would be one less day of vacation time used if we went the first week of August. I am flexible for one week of June-Sep pretty much, I just need enough advance to book off and plan.

Should work fine. I don't know the size of fish it could handle but that is the only question you really need to answer as most of the fish in that area are not skittish but use their camouflage instead.

A sling will handle just about as big as they come, as long as the water is clear enough to keep'em in sight if not stoned. Not skittish sounds good, I don't shoot enough anymore to be a very good shot.

I suggest you rig a float line system or something along those lines because the visibility could be amazing or it could be down right awful. You don't want to be forced to pass on a large fish just because the visibility bad.

There is the rub. Slings don't work with a line. They are strictly freeshaft if you want to develop any power or accuracy. Makes a sling wonderfully easy to carry around, but does limit your options. If it's not clear, I stick to fish small enough that they can't swim off with the shaft and I can get them to the surface on one dive. As long as there is dinner, I'm happy to pass on a fish.

I am sure with the amount of spearfisherman that should be coming that dinner should not be a problem unless we get stormy weather. Then if we get dinner or not really depends on the skills of the divers.

Has anyone had any luck finding a boat contact? Any idea what part of the Island we will be at? Depending on the coastline we could make this a dive from shore trip or rent kayaks.

I wouldn't worry about a pole spear or sling, with the exception of ling cod, a good shot on a greenling or rockfish will stone them very easy. even with a ling, a head shot should let you get conroll of them quickly. just make sure you pick your shots (like any shot with a sling.)

How about August 09-17? The reasons are this: If we travel on either the August or September long weekends, then air travel, ferry travel, traffic will be brutal. This week is in the middle and it might be less stressful for some.
Lee if you can contact Lars and see if he can get anything solid re: boats/camping/lodges etc that'd be great.
I'd take the Friday August 08 as well as I'll be driving from Edmonton.

The last week of August would still be the best for me. I will have to be out on the coast after that time so it will save me coming back to Alberta then having to go out again. It will also be the most likely time that I can get off work.

August 9-17 sounds great to me. Staying away from holiday traffic is good.
