BC Spearing Trip: Round 3 (2008)

I don't think we should give up on the QC yet. We just don't have enough research into the area yet. If it means that more people will come if we go to the main island, then it would be good to switch sites. I still think though, that our potential for big fish and large populations is to go to QC. That being said, I love the west side of the island. Hopefully Tyler could enlighten us about the fishing potential in his area. There are some closures for finfish in that area, during the time of year we would be going, which we could probably work around, but something to consider:

From DFO

Muchalat Inlet east of a line from the Gold River harbour limit is closed to fishing for all finfish, July 15 to October 15.

Those waters of Kendrick Inlet northwesterly of a line from Boston Point to
Salter Point on the southern tip of Strange Island are closed to fishing for all
finfish July 15 to October 15.

The waters inside a line drawn between square white fishing boundary signs
on the opposite sides of the entrance to Nesook bay; and the waters inside a
line drawn between square white fishing boundary signs on the opposite sides
of the entrance to Head Bay, and the waters inside a line drawn between white
fishing boundary signs on the opposite sides of the entrance to Hisnit Inlet are
closed to fishing for all finfish July 15 to October 15.

Tahsis Inlet bounded on the north by a line from the most northerly point of
Strange Island to a boundary sign on the opposite shore of Tahsis Inlet and
bounded on the south by a line from Salter Point on the southern tip of Strange
Island to Hoiss Point on Vancouver Island is closed to fishing for all finfish
July 15 to October 15.

Tahsis Inlet north of a line from Mozino Point to a boundary sign on the
opposite shore is closed to fishing for all finfish July 15 to October 15.

Zeballos Inlet north of a line commencing at a boundary sign located
49°56.689’N and 126°49.121’W to a boundary sign located at 49°56.689’N to
126°48.006’W (approx. 1 km south of the Little Zeballos River) is closed to
fishing for all finfish July 15 to October 15.

I agree Lee, we MUST go to QCI, but its a lot of travelling for a DB gathering. Let's maybe hit the west coast. It's gorgeous, the diving's different, ie: bigger life and surges from Japan haha.
I'm hoping Tyler steps in here. If anyone knows his email, give him a shout.

edit: shite, I didn't see the closure on finfish... any thoughts?

As part of my quest for global conquest I must engineer greater personal accessibility to that whole part of the planet.
Send Money. I promise to use it only for good.

James just sent me a private message that made a good point about not giving up on Telegraph. It got me thinking about the benefits of going to Telegraph:

-We know multiple places to potentially dive or not dive
-Relatively easy access for everyone
-Amazing scenery and wildlife
-We have the nautical charts
-Awesome campground with all the amenities we need including: unlimited shower use, wood, store, washing machine, freezers, drinkable water etc.
-Relatively cheap
-Lindsey and his boat is a good contact and pretty much catered to whatever we want
-Colin's hunting buddy offered help with boating if we come back
-We will still get fish, enough for daily feasts and have the potential for big ling...they are still there somewhere (if only Haddington would open :vangry)
-We found that nice rockfish spot the last day, near where the bald eagle island was.
-You never know what the current will bring in....

Just some things to consider. My personal preference would probably be to try and venture out to uncharted areas for us (QCI, Tahsis etc). Though, that may come at a price. I am willing to go with the group decision. It would be nice to know more about the Tahsis area to help our brainstorm.

From my talks to Tyler it takes about 30 minutes from his place to get to the Ocean so with the closures we would basically want to have a boat to go spearfishing.

Well I'd be up to going back to Telegraph Cove then if everyone agrees! I like Greenling and enjoy hunting them too. If that's going to help get people up here then let's do it. It is beautiful, we know what's there, we have a boat contact, and maybe we could get a good Ling here and there.

Theres alot to like there. One of the things I really like is the fact that you can dive right there. It seemed there was quite a bit to explore just along that immediate coast. We could still hit haddington and get some nice video of those monsters - possibly its legal to strangle them?

We could research some good spots for Ling- might mean some excursions but that would be fun.

I think the DFO says if you can lasso them, then they're yours ;)

I'm up for whatever works. You guys know the area, you decide. My thoughts: getting as far back of beyond as possible in the QCIs has great appeal to me, but with no experience camping in that type of situation, I'm a little hesitant. If we go there, I might be leaning on you for all the help I can get. Haven't heard anything yet from the scuba operation in Rennel. Telegraph Cove sounds good, too, and has enough civilization to comfort my poor inexperienced derierre.

Would a big lobster snare qualify as a lasso?

Telegraph Cove it is; job can wait. Are we set on the August 9-17 dates? By the way, where the heck is Telegraph Cove???? Seriously, I haven't a clue as how to get there. Any idea on the best route to fly in from Florida?

Ask Jimdoe if you can ride in one of the many boxes or bags he will be bringing.
