Hi

Currently I am using the more marketed BCDs (Seaquest Pro QD+), but have found that it is quite bulky, so planning to change to a more simple one.

The DiveRite ones look pretty simple and much less bulky. But it uses an aluminium backplate, which I am not sure about. Can anyone tell me the advantages/disadvantages of using a aluminium backplate BCD?

the main difference between the steel and the alum. backplate is weight.

You can take off a good bit of pounds...6 i think...maybe alittle more...out of your weight pouch if you use the steel plate.

Some think it is better to travel with an alum back plate...it makes no diff to me.

It is definitely better to travel with an alu plate. Here in the UK, I use a stainless plate with steel cylinders to offset the bouyancy of my drysuit. When I travel, I am always on the limits for luggage weight, so I take the Alu one, even though I would prefer to use the steel to offset the bouyancy of aluminium cylinders.

My steel plate weighs 3 kg, and the alu 800g. I am also getting an extra thick 5mm steel plate that weights 5.5kg, to take more weight off of my belt.
