Hi guys. I am still searching for a club to join so I can actually start training seriously. I have taken the safety aspect seriously and not attempted to 'give it a go' in the pool on my own. However I am very keen to improve.

Can any one give me some tips on any dry land training I can be doing. I have been doing some static breath holds on the sofa and in bed. Longest so far is 2:03, but I am improving quite fast.

Other than simply holding my breath, is there anything else I can do?

Cheers heaps!

Stuff you can do

Hi,
first thing to do is try to get as much information as possible, since you're here, you're already doing that.

Second thing, augment your cardio vascular capacity. A lot of people recommend bicycle, although, imho, a good thing is to go to work on foot if that's not too far from your place (5km = 3 miles = 1 hour walk).

Third, have your muscle lear to work in anaerobic mode, that is with high co2 level and low O2 level. To do that, i go to the gym and do some weight lifting in apnea. The trick is to hold your breath for all the length of the exercise. You can also hold your breath and walk a certain distance.

Fourth thing, learn to relax, in order to be able to hold your breath very long, you need to lower your O2 consomption. The best way to do that is to relax, like in meditation. The more often you do relaxation/meditation, the easier for you it will be to do good apnea.

Fifth trick, find a couple of friend, bring your wife/girlfriend, to go with you, it's much entertaining to do something when you're not alone. And HAVE FUN!
