Hi, Just got back from Kos Greece. I Have been snorkeling on holidays for a while now but this time I bought a speargun. I did not buy it till about four days before the end of our holiday, boy do i wish i had bought it at the begining as i had so much fun. Now I am back in the UK I intend to get all the gear and get some well needed practice in. I know over here is a different ball game what with the cold and all, also I don't live down south I live in Cheshire but its only 50min drive over to north wales. Any way I just thought I would see if there were any web sites on spearfishing and I was amazed to find loads. This one has loads of stuff on it, and I am sure I will find it very useful in helping me to make the right choices when it comes to buying the right Gun, Wetsute, and all the other things I will need. I do already have quality mask, snorkel, and flippers, although my flippers are old I can upgrade at a later date. The gun I gave to Kostas a realy nice guy who worked at the appartments as I thought I would have no chance in bringing it back on the plane too the UK, I found out later that I could have. Never mind I made a good freind who told me that next year to see him and he will lend me one of his, and take me where he goes so I am looking forward to that already. I am not going to rush out to the first shop i find and buy all the gear i need, I much prefer to take my time loading up with as much info as pos, then i will be more clued up on what is right for me, and where and what i am likley to catch. So If any one has any beginers tips or helpful hints I will be only too pleased to here from you. Thanks John.

Those are very, very good ideas, John, especially waiting for more information until you purchase your gear. I've learned to do that, but it was an expensive lesson :(. Much of the freediving/spearfishing gear is quite good, but it helps to get recommendations before you buy. Check out the freediving and spearfishing equipment threads. There's a lot of good info in those. Also, feel free to ask questions. What kind of mask/snorkel/fins do you have? I can almost guarantee you, you'll end up with more. That's the fun of it :D
Anyway, welcome to Deeperblue. Feel free to use the 'Find a Buddy/Places to Dive' forum as well. Lots of good info and good people here :)

Hi BatRay. My mask is a Technisub, I think i paid about £40 two or three years ago for it. My snorkel is aTusa ImprexII bought at the same time how much i can not remember. My flippers are as i said old bought about fifteen years ago, they are the type you use boots with and back then i think i paid about £40 or £50 for them. It says on the back of them US Divers made in Italy, they are black with COMPRO GRAPHITE Aqua Lung Pro line writen on the front in yellow. I know flippers have changed a lot over the years but it means i don't have to splash out for things i already have at the moment. I will buy better flippers in the near future.

You know, I think I've seen those fins, or something very much like them. Sounds like a respectable snorkeling kit that you have. For myself, I have three masks, two snorkels, three sets of fins, two sets of gloves...it goes on from there. It's a good thing I'm not wealthy, or the list would be even longer! Did you get any fish with your speargun? Any stories there?
