Best Monofin for Newbie

For newbies, for practice, here is one budget solution:
Freediving Monofin Hyper + bag + neoprene socks - Leaderfins

Yeah, its best bang for the buck i think

I had luck and got offered a used Leaderfins Sport. I think it'll be enough to check out if I like monofinning at all. If that's the case the Hyper will be the next step.

Update on my previous suggestion:
Me and a buddy from our freediving club bought identical Leaderfins Hyper monofins (medium "softness", glassfiber material), and they both broke after less than two months and only a few gentle dives.

So basically, it seems Leaderfins' glassfiber material has a problem. Don't buy them. The V-bend on these is so bad it is bound to cause problems like depicted above.

What I did like about the fins, was the footpockets. I chose one shoesize (EUR) bigger than my shoe size, and it fits nicely. I can have it on for an hour or maybe even two if I want to. So please choose a big shoe size if you order.

Also, Leaderfins makes REALLY soft blades. Choose hard for medium, exhard for hard...

The really annoying thing is, that if the fins break, its not covered by their warranty, and the best they could do after my fin had broken after 6 weeks was to give 50% discount on a new fin. Well, I'll soon have a Hyper Carbon to test out. I hope it lasts longer... I'll post something here once I know.

I'm looking at the Waterways "Nemo Wing" as my first monofin. It looks well made and has proper full footpockets. Does anyone have any feedback on these monofins?

I think I have no option now but to get the x20....:t .... got to start looking for a shimano shoe!!

To be clear, the X-20 comes with the shoes attached. You don't need to buy shoes, but it is useful to try some on if you are unsure of the sizing.

Hi Mifu, No replies so far. I have gone ahead and placed the order with Bogdan at Waterway so give me a couple of weeks and I will be able to give you more information. Placing the order and payment was really easy using Paypal. Really looking forward to trying it for the first time.

Total newb here and have nothing to compare to but I purchased a Waterways Model 1 in medium stiffness a few months back for training in the pool and so far so good! Love it.

I also consider other Waterway mono - model 1 - which I have learned seems to be good for newcomers when it comes to training proper technique and might have a little bit better performance but not so high comfort

Hi there,

I'm a competitive finswimmer and in practice we all use WW mono fins. We all get the model 2 as it's the easiest one and probably comfortable with everyone delivering a balance of strength and comfortability because some people don't like the length of the model 1 even though it's only 4cms longer and others think the model 3 or nemo are just too weak. Now as for the distance, mine is middle (no one has the sprinter), but others use long distance ones as well. I've had mine for over a year and a half now and it still works like a charm so I'd recommend you to get the model 2 middle one instead.

I am after first swims in WW model 1 (medium). This mono is not the easiest I have tried when you are newcomer but when you focus on what you are doing you can overcome some newbie problems

I think it has nice performance as well and in general I am very satisfied because of that choice.

There is only one thing that potential buyer should have in mind - I have chosen the biggest footpocket size 46 (32) and with my foot size 46/47 there is not to much space (but there are some solutions for that)
