Is there anyway you guys tell how good/bad the vis is before you hit the water? It seems to me that the water can look crystal clear when you are gearing up, and then when you get in, can be really cruddy. I want to go out to spring lake this weekend, which is spring fed, so I think it will be slightly warmer than the others, and clearer? Any opinions?

Around here (where I live) most of the lakes have decent vis at some point during the year...Some always suck.

The only way to REALLY know is to get out there and try it...And to have a back-up lake to go to in case the vis is down where you wanted to try.

After a few years of "trial & error" you'll learn which local lakes have good vis and when.

Good Luck!

I don't look straight down into the water to completely judge clarity. Usually looking straight down you have better vis than lateral vis. If you can make out the bottom in 10' of water, you might see 5' when your at the bottom.

I look out a little ways and try to look at something that is sticking out of the water and how well I can see it through more water. If the object is 10 feet away and I can only see a shape or just 3" of it under the water, the vis will not be great.

But not great is relative, a lot of times it just determines my initial gun choice, since I just drove 3+ hours to get there. It may be tough to determine vis of 5' or 10', but after you checked it and have reference from previous dives you'll get a better guesstimate.

IMO it's a learned skill. For me I've never paid a lot of attention unless we have an alternate lake choice to try. If the vis looks to be 5' or better then it's a go. If it's 3 or under, then it would just be a waste of time in my mind.

just my 2 cents.

Well spring lake is clear into august, so I think that will be my first dive this year. My beuchat comes tomorow, and then, I WILL BE ABLE TO DIVE WHENEVER!

Start thinking about buying a nice pair of WARM SOCKS and GLOVES- When we go out in the cold water- it's our feet and hands that get cold.

Aye...Me feet be frozen last trip out...Mainly me Gnarly heels...But me phallange's was a bit cold too!

Could'nt do it for long without me gloves and socks! :naughtyTried ONCE earlier this year...made it for maybe a half hour hour so...Then the pain was just too much...

Neoprene ice fishin' gloves will work in a pinch though...Infact they work awesome...Especially if they got a vecro strap!

My "mares" 3 mil socks don't cut it at all in water below 50 degrees...I think the neoprene on the bottoms is compressed from having too much of a load on 'em! roflOops...I almost forgot...I stopped writin' in "Pirate"...Yargh matey!

How do you get thick enough socks in closed heel fins?

Well, I went out today. Viz was a hazy 5 feet. Couldnt see anything, the lakes average depth if you go on lake-link is 31 feet. The fish are on the bottom and I am on the top. I forgot my weight vest at home, and the belt by itself was not enough to sink me. But BOY! That beuchat wetsuit, feels like you are dry the whole time! Its so warm on the inside, at first I was just trying to "burp" it, but then I realized, why fight it. Next time I just need more weight. Saw a couple little perch, and the DNR. Thought I had my wallet, but I didnt. Luckily the guys were nice and ran me through their computer. Sure enough, there was my fishing liscense, and as he put it "OOOHHH! And you donated a dollar to lake research too!" It was funny. He stuck around for awhile and we talked about spearfishing, about how far we can see, and how far the guns can shoot, and left seeming pretty impressed. Next time I just have to remember my wallet. :head

Not the right place for this- but it'll work.

Thinking about going to Crystal Lake Friday morning (5/23) If it's good- I'll stay. If it's slow or the vis isn't the best - i'm heading over to Wood Lake. Just thowing it out there- if anyone wants to go.

Last year around this time Crystal had 30' vis and full of fish.

One of these days im going to find myself in your neck of the woods. You guys are going to have to show me the ropes of the inland spearos Will my riffe 110 euro do the trick?:blackeye

Blaiz- a 110 would work in lake michigan as the vis there can reach 100' or if you plan on shooting the lockness monster. I suppose it would work. And there is no such thing as overkill- dead is dead. You're welcome to our neck of the woods anytime. Would definately show you the fish. Let you fight some Carp.

I actually have a 115cm beuchat marlin- I bought for Lake Michigan. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but they'll see when I'm popping a Giant Perch from 20' away.

Are you on the big island, otherwise were in "hawaii"? I got a couple offers from guys on oahu, so I would be more than happy to return the courtesy.

You are a lucky man. One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Other than Door County Wisconsin, in August that is. :inlove Your also lucky you avoid the uber-tourism in Oahu, although it cant be good on Maui either.

Maui is pretty bad too. Ive always hated tourism, or atleast the way it is prioritized here, but now that I own my own business I see how important it is. Its pretty scary here with the shutdown of Aloha Airlines, ATA and the general state of the economy. The beaches are a lot less crowded though

Alot of people get a bad taste in there mouths from Oahu. Waikiki and Honolulu SUCK! I have spent way too much time there and I hate it. There are very nice places in oahu though. The north shore is beautiful as is the east and west sides.

Oh man, dont say that. As far as saltwater goes, Im used to diving in florida. Compared to there you have about a million times more coral, right off of waikiki. UH Manoa hooked me up with a good discount on airfare through AA and a discount on a Hotel within walking range of Waikiki. I didnt get to see the north shore because I was there during "winter" when thats the windy side. I was plenty happy with that. Hanuama bay is a ripoff though dude, and the snorkeling instructional video was a pain, but I guess they have to have it for all the dumb tourists.
