Hello DeeperBlue Community,
I'm looking for advice and best practices regarding warm-up and equalization drills when doing deep recreational freediving, specifically from a buoy without a dedicated dive line.
My Current Setup & Experience:
Location: Typically diving in open water (ocean/lake) from a buoy.
Depth: Currently comfortable to 25-30 meters (80-100 feet). Aiming to progress safely.
Equalization: Using Frenzel, generally effective, but sometimes hit a "sticking point" around 15-20m on the first few deeper dives of the session.
Warm-up: My current warm-up usually involves a few relaxed static apnea holds, followed by a couple of shallow dives (5-10m) for lung packing/stretching, and then gradually increasing depth. Your Texas Benefits website
No Dive Line: I'm often diving in locations where setting up a dedicated dive line for warm-ups is impractical or not allowed. This means my warm-up dives are typically "no-line" descents, relying on visual cues or depth gauges.
The Problem/Challenge:
The issue I'm encountering is that without a line to guide my descent speed and provide a physical reference, it's harder to fine-tune my equalization during warm-ups. I want to ensure my equalization mechanism is fully "primed" before attempting my maximum comfortable depth, without rushing or over-pressurizing. The "sticking point" sometimes catches me off guard, leading to aborted dives or a feeling of strain.
Specific Questions for the Community:
Effective Warm-up Routine (No-Line): What is your recommended sequence of warm-up dives and surface exercises to prepare for deep dives when a line isn't available?
Equalization Drill Integration: How do you specifically incorporate equalization drills into your no-line warm-up dives to ensure your Eustachian tubes are fully open and ready for deeper pressure changes? Are there specific depths or techniques you focus on during these preliminary dives?
Alternative Warm-up Methods: Are there any dry equalization exercises or specific breathing techniques (beyond standard full breaths) you perform on the surface just before entering the water that significantly aid in preparing for deep equalization?
Managing the "Sticking Point": Any tips for overcoming that initial equalization resistance that sometimes occurs a bit deeper into the dive, especially when you can't control descent speed precisely like on a line?
Any advice from experienced freedivers on managing these warm-up and equalization challenges in a buoy-based, no-line scenario would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your insights.
