Best Tides For Spearfishing

Hi Guys

i'm going to stackpole tomorrow and i'm wondering what time of day to go.

I've read on this site and others LW is best, HW is best and any state of the tide is good!!! i'm confused now!!

Can someone please shed some light on this, and please explain why your choice is what it is so i can get a better understanding of this whole tide issue.

All states of tide can be productive matey, just depends where you fish!

Regarding Stackpole, fishing the pole itself should not be attempted if you don't have a kayak; the current around the headland is absolutely ridiculous at times! Its a lovely spot though but be very wary!

Where would you suggest if you were going tomorrow? (I'm a novice!!)

Hey no worries, Stackpole Quay is great and you will find fish out of the harbour to left. Nice kelp gullies interspersed with sand with a depth of max 8 metres.

I am not in Wales at the moment so have not been keepin up with the weather so I can say to be honest. Check what wind direction has been affecting the coast you want to fish and try to tuck yourself away behind a headland if it has be blowing hard. Be wary of spring tides, especially around some of the heads off thr south coast...you know the ones... As they can be bad. I got caught out last year and ended up with a mammoth swim. There arnt many exit points, I can assure you hah!

Don't be disheatened if you don't see fish a) they might not be there b) inexperience. My brother shot a bass on his first ever dive, I did not even see one for my first year!

Have the national trust started charging for the parking at stackpole yet?

I'm just enjoying being in the water mate, fish would be a real bonus though.

They charge £4 for all day. Not too bad I suppose.

Mate there could have been fish everywhere, couldn't see a thing! Poor choice of location with the conditions.
Out again on Tuesday. Better luck then hopefully.

Ah, sorry to hear that mate! There's nothing worse than getting in with zero viz - especially if you're new to the sport!

I remember my first spearing expedition - 3 hour drive to the coast, sunny when I left home, fog and driving rain when I got to coast and water that looked like soup!

Spent half an hour flopping about in the swell before having the crap scared out of me by a friendly seal who I was convinced was about to eat me!

Got out of the water to find someone had stolen the majory if the stuff I'd left on the beach - great memories!
