Beuchat Marlin Revolution

How about a very old compound rollergun? I shot it many years ago in my pool with a 3/4 band with 300% elongation. I put the shaft into plywood at 20' off the tip with a 5/16's shaft I made so I would not destroy the original. The gun was built on a US air craft carrier.

the last one is really nice! i think having cams (not round rollers) as per modern day compounds would allow for continues pressure to be exerted by the user? meaning more power could be imparted? would have a nice let off too which would be interesting to see how it wold effect accuracy and load on the trigger mech would be lower?

Tromic posted this link on another thread PSMCAFE, toute l'info sur la Chasse sous marine, l'Apnée, Snorkeling & Photo subaquatique - Tests-2 but I thought we might like to discus the gun in more detail.

I think this gun performs like Airbalete 110 (7 mm/140 cm shaft) if it would be at 58 Bars!
The slider ring is advantage because it makes the drag much lower. It is also much more efficient than other regular gun with 3 circular bunds because of lower drag of the upper bunds. The recoil is also lower and the aiming is easier. Maybe is is not very nice but I think it is very powerful.

Thanks Tromic.
Do you know that is one of the very first times I have seen a manufacturer quote performance figures - about time all guns had power ratings I think!

Optimisation of energy created in relation to force expended
• 62kg propulsion at beginning of thrust
• 22kg propulsion at end of thrust
• 460 joules Total energy created
• 46m/s intial shaft speed
• Very low recoil on firing
• Excellent manoeuvrability for its size (barrel measures only 1050 mm)
• Range of at least 5 metres

Reactions: Vov

I think this 460 joules Total energy would be actually about half of it in the water, maybe 250 joules and 33 m/s initial shaft speed. But it would be enough for 5 m distance shooting.

Ok guys, I had to do it. I bought one, even though I can't really afford it, just to try it and see if it's worth trying to make my own type of roller.

First off, everything I found on the web forums about this gun has been mostly if not all speculation and from what I saw today the speculations are not doing it justice. It's not more complicated or harder to deal with then any other gun out there. For myself I have always preferred Omer but for the last 2 years been running a Riffe Euro 110 but have shot other brands out there too. Cressi, SpuraSub, Bauchat, Secsub, Daryl Wong... Well that's what I can remember. The only thing I found that is something anyone would have to get used to is that you need to make sure you snap the front of the shaft down into a locking mechanism that is there because the tag line does not go over the shaft. Miner issue but the wrapping of the tag line and loading of the rubbers are no harder then any gun I have used. Also the bands on the bottom of the gun are not release during a shot so nothing is tangled or dangling from the bottom. once the shot is made you just take of the small bands that are now barley tight.

As for recoil - Virtually none.

Distance, well the water was mercy and I will want to take it out for a better test drive but for today - Awesome. One of two shots I got to take was at an Uhu (Parrot fish) that was moving away at a distance that my Riffe would just be able to hit. The Marlin Revolution was right on the Money and the other shot, much closer, hit it's mark too. But again, I want to take it out and really get a chance to test it side by side with my Riffe. Both on a target and real game. I will do this soon.

The only thing I don't like is the crack sound that is made when the shaft meets the ring holding the tag line but with a small o-ring and the right bonding agent you can minimize that problem.

Maneuverability - Was not a problem for my but I will try it side by side with my Riffe.

As for my overall impression of the gun? Well lets just say that I had planned on buying this gun, testing it and turning around to sell it after I got the chance just so I could see it and figure if it's worth trying to make my own type of roller. Right now and more so if does as good as I think it might when I really get to test it, I am contemplating selling my Riffe and a couple other things so I can afford the cost I just put on my card. So I am at this point happy I got to try it.

If you got any questions just shoot them over.

Thank you so much, Kaleo!
One more thing I am interested is can one hold the gun with a straight and forward arm - for some time, long enough to be able to aim? The gun seems heavy in front and I can't assess its buoyancy looking at the commercials...
Thanks in advance.
And please would you write your impressions after the 'real drive-test'?
Volodya

Yes I could hold it straight and aim just fine no matter how long I aimed. The weight balance in the water is not bad. The same or maybe just a tad bit more pressure needed on the handle then my Riffe Euro to keep the muzzle up. Really not a problem.

I am a little confused about the performance right now though. The first day I took it out I blasted an Uhu on a ranged shot and the gun looked unbelievable but the next day after I wrote the post I got to go out again and put it through it's paces I was puzzled by the performance.

I didn't want to post again until I got another chance to get out there but saw your post today. Basicly I am on the fence. It seamed to me like the shaft dove on the second dive. I do admit that I was ranging most of my shots just because I don't know the gun and that I want to see the distance it can go but on 2 fairly close shots I missed 1 out right and the other got a gut shot on an Uhu. I don't know if it was me and my aim or the gun since it has been awhile since I got in the water but I got the gut shot after I choose to raise my aim a little bit.

I want to get out there again this weekend and try a couple things and hopefully I can figure this gun out. One of the bands is hard to load but once I figured out how to get the leverage I had it each time.

Just if any one cares I am going to sell not just the revolution but also my other guns. It's more of a finacial thing and I'm gonna just relay on my 3-prong while I make my own roller.

Well... My point is... I saw a yellow-fin tuna... seemed a bit longer than me! It came to about 6-7 meters, made half a circle and... swam away! I was only looking helplessly, holding my Picasso Century Pacific 100, with a 6,5 mm shaft...
So, on one hand I am looking for a gun able to take a fish about half the size of that tuna, and on the other hand I am fascinated by the capability to have a 105 cm gun taking fish at 6-7 m... The sheer quality of the product is attracting!
Thank you Kapuaa!

Definitely, that is the main reason I wanted to buy it. Short gun long range, hell yeah. So I had to just check it out. Yeah I knew I was going to take a hit but I want to study it so I can make one like it that is a 90 that can shoot like it's a 110 or so. I do a different style of wood working but I have the equipment to make a gun just need to try and once I learned about the roller idea I was fascinated too.

The only issue right now is why did it seam that the shaft dove on me w/ every shot on the second dive. was it my aim or the gun. At first I was giving the gun the benefit of the doubt but after all the shoots, well I'm not that bad of a diver. lol. Plus I the loud crack when the fin hit the slip ring is alarming but I'm still on the fence on if that has any effect on alerting the game. But I also have an idea on a muzzle that may fix that.

Mainly if you don't have to get it right now, hold off till I get another run or 2 at it if I don't sell it be for a get the chance and if someone does buy it, don't take that as a sign that it's not worth it. That was my plan from the beginning. So if you can hold of I'll get a post up soon after another dive as I can.

No, Kapuaa, I'm not in a hurry... These things need some thinking and testing...
I guess 19 mm main band and 2 x 16 mm additional bands are the maximum that body can take.... I generally don't believe that one can/should buy a gun and start overpowering it with thicker bands, just to increase range or shaft diameter. If the producer has put that rigging, it most probably means that is the optimal one.
So, a 7 mm shaft can take how big fish? I don't know...
The Youtube clip shows the appearance of cavitation over the first 2 meters or so of shaft travel. That shows, probably 44 m/s initial speed is an excellent one and I should not try to increase it...

I can't afford to buy a gun just to test it and if it is no good - throw it away..

Thanks so much.

Understandable. I only did so to test and sell or sell my other guns if it was THAT GOOD. Just on the fence right now. There is little to no instructions with this gun but Quickly you notice that there are 3 hooks on the bottom of the gun that hold the 2 smaller bands. Why 3? Different setup for range of shot?
Another thing I found interesting is that one of the bands on the bottom was much shorter in length then the other. When I finally figured out the angle to get enough leverage to pull that band and set it on the first hook, it held so much more tension then the other band on the third hook. I try'd e-mailing the company but heard nothing back. Again I need to get out in the water and play with it some more.

I have no commercial involvement with Beuchat but I will Pm you some contact info later tonight after work as I know some one who tested the unit
early on.

Cheers, Don

Awsome, could you please. I'd like to know if I'm alone in what I am experiencing with this gun and if there's anything that will help.

Mahalo,

so Gun is out for a few years. any reviews on it ? is it worth of money ? or is any better competitor on a market ?

Hi Guys
I have two revolution guns and have used them both in the UK ,New Zealand and South Atlantic so I am really lucky.
Points raised about lateral movement are correct to a degree, due to the perfect balance you can hold and point the gun with two fingers so its very easy to line up and produce good accurate long range shots (for the 105 think 1.4m gun, 85 think 110cm)
Out of the water they seem heavy and complex ,once in the water totally awesome.
Loading is fast once you have got used to flipping it over and the resistance is low due to spreading the power over the single large top band and the two power bands on the bottom.
For UK bass fishing in the west country they are brilliant with good hitting power at maximum range and no wrist strain when indian hunting for several hours. Quality is good but the only downside is my wife has banned them from being mouted above the fireplace at home! Game fish up to 50kg no probs reels are good brake away better.
For big tuna 100kg -250kg I would switch to a Rob Allen 1.4 due to the robust nature of the spears.
Large yellowtail and powerful amberjack have all fallen into the range trap of the revolution.
Would I buy another , the new carbon only version is out now and I have placed my order. Nuff said.
Mike.

Yes, I saw the new carbon one, wasn't on their site last week though. I think it retails for less than the wood one, is that correct? Looks good thought, I have the marlin revolution also and I am happy with it, I am always afraid of scratching it up though, so far I have done a good job, hehe. I would also mount it if my wife let me
