ULLALLA'! That's the biggest carp I've ever seen! (joking: ha ha)
Is it good to eat? Why don't you tell us the story of this catch (location, depth, technique, gear...)?

hope you ate it. those guys are my buddies when I'm freediving/spearfishing, very curious, and friendly.

Fishing Napolean Wrasse in the Maldives is illegal... they are becoming rare and also are an attraction for divers. See the fish markets in Hong Kong, their sizes are becoming smaller and smaller!

Where did you catch that, Egypt? :rcard hope you choked on it

....the catch was in the red sea in Saudi Arabia "South of Jeddah" ....by a single speargun ...it ran into the reef to hide, facing towards the hit was in between the eyes ...actualy the reefs made it an easy catch ..(if you zoom in and look closely again at the picture you will see where the spear hit it) i dont know the exact depth....IT IS VERY TASTEY

Please be advised ladies & Gents that there are NO regulations in saudi arabia concerning catch limits or species. if you can shoot it you can keep it, doesn;t matter what it is. Scuba or Free.

as much as some people have a problem with spearing these fish it's perfectly legal.

I'm told they taste a lot like parrot fish.

mumtaz sadiq!

Here in Oz, I've seen schools of 20-30 on reefs. They are protected now, but even prior to that announcement they were very friendly. Still, a 60kg wrasse will trash your gear.

The main threat was commercial fishing for the Hong Kong live fish market.... :vangry

They are protected in Maldives now as well.... :thankyou for the same reasons. Years back, the Maldivian government reached an agreement with Hong Kong to supply Napos to their market.

The local Maldivian divemasters then threatened to go out and kill every single one they could find, just to stop them getting the business and making money.

Couple of months later, they passed a ban on fishing Napoleon Wrasse yayyyyyy

Amphibious, its not about what's legal or what's not.

amphibious,
FYI and to update you ..there are some kind of species is not legal to catch in some seasons ...anyone does that in the restricted seasons he will get his self in problem if the "coast guard" caught him...in some cases, the boat and the equipment will be taken from you as a penality.

such as some kinds of the Grouper fish as far as i know.... for more information http://www.persga.org

and it taste alot different from the parrot fish<===== eats corals...it depends on the cook ;)

my experiences with Saudi Coast Gaurd was always that it greatly depended on "Wasta" weather or not there was any penalty ;)

How deep was that fish when you saw it? are they a deep water fish? Bearing in mind you used scuba to catch a nearly tame fish!

There is also a current but oldstanding law in England that allows an Englishman to kill a Welshman with a longbow in Hereford's high street, providing the Welshman agrees. Much the same thing really dont you think?

I would say that they are a strong fish, I read an article in Hawaii skindiver once that described a hunt in the Marshall Islands for one.
the article said how hard they were to kill and how strong the fish was, trashed a spear and a big lump of reef!
Big fish

It's board policy. if it's legal, it's all good. don't like it? take you case to those that made the laws or have the power to change them, not those exercising their legal right. we've gone over this ad nausium before in reference to Scuba Spearing.
