For Torbay, personally I would go for an Omer XXV 80cm (as used by StuckInSurrey). I used an XXV 75cm a little further south last year and it was great in the fairly poor visibility I usually encountered. But what's wrong with the Comanche - I would think that would be good there too?

However, if you dive with Shiney, you might need a very robust gun like a SA-style railgun (Rabitech/Rob Allen/Freedivers/Orca/Pelagic/Mako/...) to put up with the wear and tear of all those huge bass (& bream) he catches

Bottom line is that so long as it has a spear, rubbers and a working trigger it probably doesn't matter!
When I used to shoot rabbits with my mates as a teenager there were some people who had very flash guns and some of us had cheap and cheerful. We soon found that there are so many other factors in successfully shooting rabbits that gun choice was only very rarely an issue and that knowledge of rabbits and time spent in the field are what counts :t

I like powerful guns even at close range, a fish that is completely penetrated by the spear won't escape where as a fish with a spear half way though its body can use the spear for resistance allowing it to tear a big hole in its flesh & escape to worthlessly die!
I have found a 90 with a 6.3 - 6.5mm spear & a single 18mm band at full stretch will penetrate a fish at close range but a 90 might be a little long for very poor vis however I would prefer that disadvantage to losing out on penetrating power?

Nothing wrong with the comanche mate, mine came with me today for my first proper hunt, I love it, its is the best gun I own. No matter what gun I buy I always go back to it

The Comanche is one of the best guns in its category, that is the category of the traditional french style arbalète: 28mm alu tube, screw in 16mm bands, 6mm shaft. Light, simple, quick. No rails, no shaped barrels, no fancy muzzles, no bells and whistles. Just the ease of manouvering a simple and light weapon with a fast thin shaft (it is proven that 6mm is faster than 6,5mm on short range shots) for smallish fish such as bass, breams & Co.
Three years ago they made a poll on the most popular italian forum, with hundreds of votes, about the favourite gun: in its reliable simplicity, the Comanche won hands down the poll as Italy's favourite speargun (not to mention the 3 world championships won with Apache/Comanche guns. The 2004 World Champ in the Pacific Ocean was won by a guy using mostly a Comanche 60)).
Now, you may wonder, why am I posting this? It's because I have one of those for sale!!! (even if its rather a free gift than a real sale).

get the rabitech.
i own 3 comanches (75, 90, 100)
1 picasso century wood 110
3 freedivers (60, 120, 130)
and 1 rabitech 100

and i can honestly say that the rabitech is the best out of the lot. single 20mm band and 7mm spear, and thats a lot of fish taken with this gun. i would honestly estimate over 300 kgs of grouper have been taken with this gun and till this day my shaft is straight as an arrow (knock on wood).

ha ha ha! Ho ho ho ho ho! I remember your unfortunate attempt to modify the Comanche, and the subsequent wrath of the Gods that crushed upon you. :blackeye
Okay, maybe I should take your words in consideration: never challenge the wrath of the Gods. I'll follow your advise and keep the guns if no bid arrives in the next 24 hours.

Hi lads, dont get me wrong, theres nothing bad about the good old comanche, just got few quid put away for a rainy day and rather blow it on beer.......umm beeeeeer! i thought I'd treat myself to a new gun, perfect start to the season. Its interesting reading everyone's opinion on the subject though, as the comanche is my first and only gun so all info is good!

i know how you feel. my first mask was cressi and all i used to dive with for the next 10 years was cressi. i then bought an AB Biller, which at the time i thought was great. and then i went back to comanches because i never found a reel for a biller in Kuwait. and i dived for 2 more years with comanches. but then i tried a picasso, and i thought it couldnt get any better, till i tried rabitech.
at the end of the day, use whatever works for you.
