Today I went to St Paul's Cathedral in London to fulfill my touristy obligations. For those who haven't been there it is an absolutely stunning building. You can actually climb up to the dome and go outside for a stunning view of London.
What's this got to do with Herbert Nitsch and his Constant Weight world record? The distance from the floor to the top of the dome is 111m, the same distance as his dive.
Stand underneath the centre of the dome and look up, and you will truly appreciate how far this distance is.
There are roughly 270 steps to the Whispering gallery which is about half way up. We were up there and as I was looking down I realised this was about the same height as my deepest dive. After a few seconds of "wowing" at myself, I looked up and saw the same distance again to the ceiling. Another couple of hundred steps and we were at the top.
Makes you realise how deep these guys over 100m are actually going when you see it and not just hear of it. It's a bloody long way!
Kudos to all these divers and lets hope we never get blasé about such efforts from the top guys.
