Hi,

I recently did some freediving overseas and my trip involved 3 flights getting to the destination, all those flights air con and pressures caused some blockage that took a while to unblock in the sinuses which isn't great for freediving.

Anybody here have any tips on avoiding these blockages, precautions and rapid remedies to help alleviate the problems???

Obrigado..........

I have had problems since 2002 with blocked sinuses and the only thing that really works for me is Nasonex or Rhinocort Aqua. These are cortison spray and opens up the sinuses very efficient.

Try Afrin, it works quicker (but maybe not as effective in the long run) as the steroids, it is not on any antidoping lists, and it does not significantly elevate heartrate or bloodpressure. Except if used over several days in a row, it can have the reverse effect. Most importantly though, check with your doctor before using any medication period.

A saline spray such as Sterimar or Salex is very good to keep the sinuses moist and counteract the effects of dry air. It is the only thing I use now. It might be worth using a medicated spray if the sinuses are very blocked, your doctor can advise about this.

I used to be on long-term medication for nose and sinus trouble for most of my life since early childhood and also had operations. The treatment has caused irreparable damage, and now I have serious complications every time I catch a cold. I would advise anyone who is going to have long-term treatment for sinus and nose problems to find out beforehand whether it is suited to their condition, as a wrong diagnosis can have very bad consequences.

Hope this is useful...

did you see a doctor/orl-specialist? if you have persisting problems with blocking sinuses you could probably get relief by endoscopic surgery. Chronic Infections might be visible on X-Rays and they might be an indication for surgery. I really recommend seeing a doc.
Good luck Pat
