I am busy in my home area looking for new sites to dive from the shore. However, I have found nothing deeper than 20m and that is difficult to access.

I am considering getting a hold of a boat to go diving in deeper water. My dive buddy is proficient at handling boats so we are confident in our abilities to get to a deeper dive site. I am interested in how to go about setting up for a dive.

WE WON'T BE USING A SLED!

What is the best kind of boat to use for freediving?

For instance, do any of you use rope descents in the open sea and how do you set this up?

Do you breathe-up on the boat or in the water?

How does the dive compare to diving shore sites?

Any help on this would be appreciated as this will be an area of freediving me and my dive buddy have not yet experienced but are keen to get out on the sea to find deeper sites.

Thanks

A small inflatable from the likes of Quicksilver or Avon would probably be suitable. Personally I'm considering getting a Quicksilver Heavy Duty 380 when I move to Wales next month to use for diving (scuba and free) and for just cruising with along with some RIB fanatics I know (I'm a RIB fanatic myself, but the budget won't stretch that far). The Heavy Duty 380 costs about £1k plus the outboard, which can be anything up to 25hp. Has an inflatable keel so it'll plane (quicker than displacement, less resistance to motion and so on), and should be good for at least 20 knots. It rests low in the water, so getting in and out is simple, and it can easily be handled by 1 person. Plus when you're not using it, it can be deflated and packed away. All fits nicely in the boot of the car.

Hey narked, are we going to see an update on your diary soon?
Cheers,

Aye it's a bit out of date now isnt it? Been waaaay too long since I've done any freediving or apnea, hopefully moving to near the coast will get me back into it, plus there's a decent sized lake just up the road from where I'll be living/working. So, hopefully, yes, the diary will get updated!
