Bournemouth Spearos

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.

I've heard of shoals of trigger fish being taken off the groyns at Sandbanks - very tasty apparently (although I've never seen them myself).

Watch the tides very carefully though, or you'll end up under the ferry.

Recently? Yes, I can confirm they make very good eating. Very firm so they fillet nicely, like chicken breast almost. Triggers are docile but they'll try to nip you on the sly if your not careful.

Just in case you guys didn't check your PM's yet, we've pencilled in the evening of Friday 3rd April for a Bournemouth spearo pre-season meet-up at the Spyglass and Kettle on the Overcliff. Hope everyone can make it - would be good to put some faces to the names...So far it's me chrisreynolds (if he gets a pink ticket!!), and 1 Shot. Any more takers? Jimy? Gaz? Hightower? Tunny?

Hey guys,
I am Grant. A keen amature spearo who lives in Bournemouth. I go to sandbanks alot. My mate and I took mainly seabass and Mullet form there. Interesting reading about Boscombe pier...I am sure to give that a go soon. I dont like doing these things alone, so if anyone is planning a dive along the local coast here, please let me know and I would be happy to join you if you dont mind a buddy. :-)

I'll pencil it in mate, but it really all depends on what part of the country I finish working in that week - for instance, I've been on the Isle of Lewis this week (great viz, but not very handy for the Spyglass - I gotta change my job!).

Think the guy I was speaking too said it was either last season or (more likely) the season before. Apparently they are ridiculously easy to shoot.

I wasn't aware that they bite you. What happens? Do they just swim up and help themselves to a chunk? I don't think my wetsuit would appreciate that.

They bite until their teeth meet. I have holes in the calves of my 5mm wetsuit from a couple of years ago when a speared Trigger swam straight at me several times, around me trying to get a bite on. It succeeded once - but found it more difficult with a knife in its head. Seem to remember it gave a few folks on DB a bit of a laugh at the time... Another occasion when we came close to disaster...

Nobody can blame a fish for showing aggression when you have just speared it (or hooked it) but triggers can be intimidating!
Personally I have never been bitten but I did see OMD get a few nips once..
I have an Italian friend who visits Guernsey most years to spearfish, he was once surrounded by 30 -40 triggers that were a little more than inquisative!

In the book Helldivers Rodeo the author says out of the hundreds of crazy spearo's he knows (and boy are they crazy) only two people have been bitten by sharks but he doesnt know anyone who hasn't been bitten by triggerfish :martial.

Blimey, did you guys know the head of the BSA lives in Poole?? Am trying to get him along to the Spyglass meet - he reckons the Wessex spearfishing club only has 3 members!!!

This is craziness - everyone's keen to get in the water and spear, everyone needs a decent number of dive buddies to call on, there's got to be some use for a Wessex club even if you're not into competitive spearing...let's get something going again!

I remember when spearos were the bulk members of the BSAC and the Weymouth & Portland branch had a huge membership....

I'm not into competitions etc. but I have joined BSA for only £6 as an Association Member, I don't get all the perks - insurance or competition number, but it does boost the Association numbers and I get a copy of their magazine (excellent) :)

A Wessex Branch sounds a good idea - but it needs someone with a huge amount of enthusiasm and organisational skills to get that going - any ideas Rick????!!! ;)

ye old days! (very early 60's and yes that is a dead conger on the bonnet!)

I'm a member of BSA I've got a membership card for 2 years now I'm signed up as a competitive member but never did a competition. Usually the comps are on Fridays and Saturdays and they where too far from me as I use to live in Bristol before. they use to send me a magazine Cristal Clear is about all the competitions story and results and something else about spearfishing around the world and trips someone have done.
Rick, I tried to contact The Wessex Spearfishing Club but no luck I coudn't find them on the web and also tried on Yellow Pages as I'm a local now I wish to join any spearfishing club around.........or an idea should we start one in Bournemouth?
