Branko, I think contractions are not a solid indicator for euh anything.
I remember having long statics with horrible contractions starting very soon.
Also like Chris you can have them early even if you're a very good diver.
I think it's important not to seek to delay them, but to be able to tolerate them with less energy used.

Just one tip from a diver who is very happy with a pb of 7':
To avoid estimations, Accept whatever is or goes on in and around you.
You write you want to do some static preparations before your dynamic?
You know that many choose to have a 'no apnea warm up' start?
Some others have great results with a FRC approach. Laying on the floor with a partial exhale, wait for the dive response to kick in and then swim.
