Hi
I'm not actually a free diver yet so feel a bit cheeky coming on this site!
But I've neen very impressed by the quality of discussion here and would appreciate any advice on this.
I play underwater hockey and do some breath holding training for that. I've also done a version of Buteyko breathing in the past.
My problem is this - since I did an intense period of Buteyko training about 18 monts ago I nearly always get really cold hands after doing a few breath holds. The only real exception is when I'm playing hockey - or if I do breath holds while jogging.
Once my hands (and feet) get cold its very hand to warm them up and the effect increases over days if I continue to do the breath holds.
I know something about dive physiology etc -so have guessed that this might be my dive response. But really its very senstive and the effect persists unless I do some fairly strenuous exercise for 15 minutes or so.
The breath holds are pretty short by the standards here (only about 90 seconds to 2 minutes max) - I dont do any kind of hyperventilation before though and just take a normal breath in before the hold,
I'd like to carry on doing the breath holds becuse they help with the hockey and I find them a great way to calm down and get rid of tiredness - but if I carry on doing them I think my fingers will drop off!
Has anyone else any experience of this - or any ideas on how I can get round it?
Cheers, Mike
