In plain English could somebody explain this. When i practise breath holds, i find that the first attempt goes to around the 2 min 30sec mark. I then rest for 2 min then go again, this one normally gets to around 3 min, the rest is repeated and so on. I find it takes around 4 attempts to hit my max, which now stands at around 4min 30sec, (my P.B. is now 4min 43sec). Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated, cheers..

That happens to almost everyone. I don't know why exactly, but some kind of tolerance must build up. That is the reason for doing warmup statics.

Maybe someone can explain better.

Lucia :)

Hi, thanks for the replys, yes i try not to go to barmy on the first one, but contractions i do get. These ive now started to notice more especially after the first breath hold. I always suspected that like anything you need a warm up, but im surprised it takes so long to get to your max. Im not complaining though as im pretty happy with my progress, i was just puzzled, its almost like the more i try in a session the longer i seem to go. I would have thought though there must be a cut off point or danger zone. Ive read here about blackouts, and that is something im very concerned about, i dont really want to be found blue in the face by the my better half, if she did get me back from the brink i reckon i would be in for a right B*******NG , if you get my drift.. Cheers.. Oh so is it some kind of tolerance to C O 2 ?

Well, it is more complex, but basically, with the warm-up you are trying to trigger the diving reflex. The sooner and stronger it comes the longer you can hold. The ralaxation through repeated apneas, and the building up of psychical tolerance and confidence certainly also play an important role, but there is also vasoconstriction, blood shift, change of heart rate, changes of blood acidity, and supposedly the body is able to get little bit more of hemoglobin from stocks in some organs. As many times described here on the forum, you may manage to accelerate the warm up with couple of empty lung apneas.
