Breathing Reflex

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

I was just reading the article on Tom Sietas and he mentioned that his breathing reflex was about 3:00 to 3:30. I was just wondering what the breathing reflex is? I think I remember reading about it but i cant find the thread.

I don't know the exact medial definition but i'd say thats the point where your Co2 level is that high that your body thinks it's time to breathe again. I guess it is somewhere before your first contraction (isn't it?)

i too have heard about this breathe reflex or dive reflex as i heard. i'm not sure if they are the same thing but i would also like to find out more about it and how to develop it etc.

This is all controlled by a little widget in the back of your head called the Medula oblongata or something like that (spelling?) it looks after your blood CO2 levels and will give you real reminders when it thinks you should breath. Like all parts of our bodies, this can be trained to an extent to accept higher levels than its preset. Like all training, this is done by exposure to adverse conditions, in this case you hold your breath to increase the CO2 in your blood. Just remember this is not something that one can override mentaly, its a survival reaction, once it kicks in you will blackout and breath or if your underwater blackout and drown ;)
