Hey boys! Goin down under (no pun intended) in October for a little more than a month, will be staying in Brisbane.Anyone know if the spearing is good there and how I would go around finding a dive buddy? Also does anyone know closest place to Brisbane I could do freediving course?

Well... funny you should ask :D

There are plenty of spearo's in Brisbane, although Brissy itself is not on the ocean. You can go an hour south to the Gold Coast/Tweed Heads area and there is good spearing down there, especially if you know someone with a boat. Also, north of Brisbane has some good shore diving spots on the Sunshine Coast (90km's north of Brisbane). From Brisbane you can also go out to Moreton Island and Stradbroke island and there is some great diving there, although much of it is green zone now which you cannot spear in. Most areas on the coast have headlands that you can hunt, just be aware of local rules (eg. spearing beaches is illegal - you must be within 20m of the edge of the beach). A good website for fishing rules and regulations is the Queensland Dept of Primary Industries (Recreational fishing (Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries)), go to the Fisheries section.

As far as finding a dive buddy while you're here, I would suggest getting in touch with the dive shop I teach through here in Brisbane, Adreno Spearfishing and Scuba (Adrenaline Spearfishing Supplies - Dive Equipment Specialists), they have tons of connections and will be able to hook you up with someone. Also get onto some of the Australian forums such as the one on the Adreno website which is a bit more Brisbane orientated, other ones to note are Extreme Spearfishing and Australian Freediving Community - Fanatical about Freediving in Australia.

The closest place to Brisbane you can do a freedive course is.... Brisbane. I teach AIDA courses here in Brissy, you can find details on Freedive Downunder - Freedive courses and training in Australia.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
BEn
