I broke two ribs on my right side (8&9) last month. It was fairly painful recovery but I was feeling better and at about week 4 and decided to do some easy diving. Big mistake, I re-injured the ribs... Now they're hurting worse than ever.

Does anyone have suggestions for recovery with this type of injury? When can I dive again?

Rest. Rest. Rest. An let it heal properly before you do anything physical, ESPECIALLY freediving. I can’t think of any other sport more demanding for the torso/tub cage... well MMA maybe, but thats a different story.

Did you get a xray in the first case? Just to see that they align, and there is no splinters etc?

Ribs can take up to 2mnths to heal properly.

The X-ray showed that they were both displaced which wasn't a surprise because I could feel them/hear them popping and moving. The X-Ray also showed prior breaks of different ribs that have since healed long ago. It made me wonder if those old breaks have affected the integrity and flexibility of other ribs?

I could pop them back into place (I think) with a deep inhalation. A cough or sneeze sends them off again. I was told that when the soft tissue heals they won't move around so much. But at this point they are very painful and move a lot. Worse than the initial injury I think but perhaps my pain tolerance is shot...

It's difficult for me to just rest... Was hoping to hear from anyone with similar injuries? A bit nervous about long term prognosis
