Buoy Setup

I thought I would sure my spearfishing buoy setup which I have been modifying to make a slick and easy to use as possible. I fish off the north coast of Scotland and mainly rockhop and launch from beaches although the odd boat dive sometimes goes down too.

I use the Best Hunter double bladder buoy which has been a pretty rugged and reliable bit of kit.

I have an Omer line and winder which is unspooled according to water depth then tied off on the tow point at the front of the buoy, the winder and spare line are stashed in the pouch on top of the buoy. The line has a metal snaplink which I attach to my speargun.

The pair of Crocs are used for walks across stony beaches or rocks so my delicate feet are protected.

A round stringer hangs from the side and a loading cup for my gun also hangs there.

The smaller floatline sitting by the flask are sometimes used in place of the line and winder. This means I can stash the flask in the pouch. I love this setup as I am completely self contained, I go to a beach, amble down the coast for a few hours and go ashore for a cup of tea to perk me up. This is just sublime on a calm summers evening.

Any thoughts, comments on this setup would be appreciated as I am always looking for ways to improve my system.

love it mate, i like the fact you have addressed the often over looked aspect of tea (very important). i use to have a similar set up but i had a little 0.5kg grapple anchor so i didnt have it trailing behind me all the time and you can then use it as a decent line when its a bit murky.

I simply don't dive without a flask of earl grey and either a trail bar or the ultimate pick-me-up, Kinder Happy Hippos. It just won't happen. Nothing beats hot combat tea flooding a cold core.

when i first started out freediving me and my buddy where in the north sea for 7 hours not noticing how low my temp had got. when we got out she produced a flask of super sweet echinasia and raspberry tea (honey not sugar)..............................best cuppa ive ever had! and that is a bold statement. not sure about the kinder happy hippo though(?)

Happy Hippos are drugs, you should get onboard with them, good quick energy. I'm heading out for a potter tomorrow night, the water is slowly getting less freezing up here.

i had what can only be described as a dip the other day. i got into water with 2-3m vis which dropped off with the swell that rolled in to 1/2m in about 30mins so just spent the rest of the day back flipping of the cliffs but the water was surprisingly warm for the north sea.

Agreed that Kinder chocolate sucks but the hippos are all wafer, meringue crumbs and a praline cream inside. Gorgeous.

Viz can go from shocking murk to 50 feet really good day.

Dude. Camo Crocs are the nuts. Combat tea and DPM are all a man needs out.

Nice set up. I would change the carabiner to one with a screw lock. I had the same one as you but changed over after cavitation freed the gun from the carabiner on more than one occasion - at first I didn't think was possible. I also wear crocs but may change over to something else as my neoprene socks slip around a bit when I do hill climbs after being in the water.
