I am heading over to Sharm in september , it will be my first time diving the red sea and I was wondering if it is cheaper to buy gear over there or here in the UK?

As with anything...

Markus,

Welcome to Deeper Blue forums!

It's difficult to tell, Sharm has grown almost exponentially over the past 6 years and large number of dive centres and hotels. I suggest you have a chat with some of the dive centres over email or phone and see what they can offer you in equipment prices.

Otherwise hit some of the big name retailers. if your based in the UK, send me an email and i'll put you in touch with some of the people I know at the big names.

Cheers mate , I'm based in london at present. i have been to a few retailers , Scuba Zone , Nautilus,Ocean Leisure etc. Any other contacts would be appreciated.Do you know of any web links to dive stores in Sharm? I'm really looking for price comparisons on fins , booties and computors etc. I was in thailand last year and things were definately cheaper there...I kicked my self for not buying some goodies while i was there! This is why i want to know the difference before i go...so i can budget for beer and goodies!!! once again cheers for your help!

A word of warning from a seasoned traveller - all that is cheap is not that good - most cheap stock in areas such as Thailand could be old stock they bought before the currency crashes around the world - some travel destinations with international clients now price in either US or the upcoming Euro - this often indicates current models that they have recently bought in hard currency.
A quick and easy way to check - is travel to X (Sharm) get a QUOTE then run to the local internet cafe spend 30 minutes comparing prices and model NUMBERS
Hope this helps ;)

Imported goods are not cheap in Egypt

My experiences from Hurghada and Naama Bay (Sharm) have been that prices are no cheaper than here in Denmark, where we have 25% sales tax on goods.
I think it must be the import taxes in Egypt; film is expensive too.
The only thing you'll get cheap there is locally made products. And that does not include scuba gear...
If you don't want to buy at your local friendly dive shop anyway, you'll probably find the best prices in European online shops.

Best of luck,
Mads
