Last time i was in Nairobi, i think i was only 2! That was in 1971 :D (be careful Donna...)

We went to a game park. My brothers went to school in Zimbabwe so we only saw them during school holidays and made the most of it. Needless to say they were so naughty we had to leave the game park early because my oldest brother filled the game ranger's petrol tank up with water and his truck was subsequently unusable. My parent's were not popular... rofl

We left Zambia when i was five... i have not been back since but am dying too..

What do you mean - be careful - Sara we're the same age! Laura can be our mentor :D

Sara, is this a scuba oriented project or freediving too?

Adrian

Adrian - this was thought up as a Scuba Article but if we can get some good "oldie" FreeDiving stories out of it we can run one of those as well.

Scuba/Spear/Freediving

i want it all :)

Edit: photos of equipment and locations, dive boats, divers etc would all be great. I want this article to give a real good feeling of nostalgia.

Mentoring hey! Sure thing girlie girls .... I could teach you a thing or two about life in the fast lane but I doubt you'd last the course ;)
Respect your elders :D !!

Ahh, what a great thread, wonderful to see divers still active and older than me.

Sara, here's a story from the dark ages.

It was summer of 1969, freshly certified and headed for a dive on the 'Empire Micah' a 400 ft oil tanker sunk during WWII, lying about 60 miles off the Florida Gulf coast, 110 ft of water. The Micah was seldom visited because it was hard to find. Our dive boat was the "Miss Hospitality" a 60 ft sport fish with the most advanced electronics of the day, a pair of loran A recievers, and a reputation of being able to find the wreak almost every time they tried. Note that does not mean every time. Well, after leaving the dock at something like 4 am, we arrived near the Micah at sunrise. The captain put a bouy in the water, circled around a few times, then leaned out of the pilot house and said, "ok everybody, look for the turtle" I thought he was joking, at least, I hoped he was. But sure enough, in about 10 minutes a turtle came up a few hundred yards away and the wreak was right under it. We must have put near a thousand pounds of fish in the boat, warsaw grouper, amberjack, red snapper, red and gag grouper, etc, etc (this from not very competent spearos) A great trip and all because of the turtle.

That reminds me of a senior I worked with way back when I was with BA, we were all fresh faced and could take on the world and Anne was 20 years or so older than us, really strict about how we behaved and came over as a bit of an old maid to be honest but we liked her all the same. One trip we were staying over in Sydney and had been teasing her that we would show her a good time, so out we went rofl all dolled up and feeling good, by the end of the night she had out partied us by miles and was the only one to cop off rofl
Yeah, Respect your elders ;)

Please pardon me, I'm a bit rusty at my linglo (that's my stupid word for anglo-lingo).

What does "cop off" mean?

I started Freediving in the early 70's, at the age of 9 or 10. I was allowed out on one of the local dive boats ( Freeport, Bahamas ) with my Dad who was a scoobie. I used to float around watching their bubbles, and when I was bored doing that, would dive down to try and reach them.

When I was 13 ( 1974 ), I learned Scuba, and was lucky enough to get an unpaid summer job with an operation called 'Scubahamas'. Every day I'd compress a few cylinders for them, and then go out on the boat with the tourists as a dive boat monkey. Most of the time I used to go down as one of the guides. Those were the days of real Scuba minimalism - no wetsuits, dive computers or BCD's, and nothing more than 2 hoses poking out of the first stage.

How lucky I was, looking back. The guys running Scubahamas back then were Bob French Senior and Junior. Wish I knew what happened to them...
