Can someone identify this fish pls?

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
that fish is commonl known as a calico bass or kelp bass they are great table fare. by the way it is also one of the most common fish in so cal waters in and around the kelp. hope this helps.
 
100 % CALICO BASS OR ALSO KNOWN AS KELP BASS.

Definetly- know what you shoot, especially in California, the land of much ammunition against spearfishing. You're legal. I am sure it is a Kelp Bass.
 
I also thought it was a largemouth bass, vermin in south african freshwater systems, but then again we do not have any saltwater bass on west coast of SA.
 
Definitely a calico bass aka kelp bass, and a nice one. Legal minimum size is 12 inches. Very good eating, and big ones are harder to spear than the white sea bass that has such a rep of being spooky.
 
Well, it's definitely not a White Seabass. It looks to me like one of the various rockfishes that we have here in CA.
 
Upon a second look, I believe you guys are right, kelp bass. It is a little hard to see the characteristic squarish white marks on his back.

Yep, that's a kelp bass. Get a couple more that size and invite all the hotties!

Throw the fillets in some foil w/ butter lemon, salt and pepper and a splash of Italian dressing, and call me.
