Hey all,

I am heading down to playa del carmen in July and I was curious if anyone knew of some good places to hunt? I looked at some charters, but I want to hunt multiple days so it gets expensive.

Are locals willing to show a guy around? Or maybe you have been and know some inexpensive places. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Around Cancun area spearfishing starts at 25m+ and you MUST get a boat ride - no spearing from the shore. It will run $200 easy for 4 hours. To get to the more shallow reef you would need to go to Mahahual. Over there reef starts at 15. I was there when sargasso would not even let you get in the water so I can not be more specific but I know that the reef is way more shallow there than in the area you are asking about. In my opinion it is a very bad area for spearfishing on a cheap. Try to get in touch with this guy: https://www.facebook.com/CANFIELDLR but don't expect cheap hunting. However if you succeed please report back.

Spearfishing on scuba is illegal in all of Mexico. It's a federal law. You can do it while free diving but it has to be outside marine park boundaries. No scuba equipment or pneumatic spearguns are allowed while spearfishing. There are often exceptions made for hunting lionfish on scuba in both locations although it's still quasi-legal, just tolerated. If you want to spear lionfish you should reach out to the dive shops you're planning to use Tutuapp 9Apps Showbox and ask them if they'd be willing to do a dedicated charter or buddy you up with other people interested in hunting lionfish.
