Cancun best place to spearfish

Hey all,

I am heading down to playa del carmen in July and I was curious if anyone knew of some good places to hunt? I looked at some charters, but I want to hunt multiple days so it gets expensive.

Are locals willing to show a guy around? Or maybe you have been and know some inexpensive places. Any help appreciated.

Around Cancun area spearfishing starts at 25m+ and you MUST get a boat ride - no spearing from the shore. It will run $200 easy for 4 hours. To get to the more shallow reef you would need to go to Mahahual. Over there reef starts at 15. I was there when sargasso would not even let you get in the water so I can not be more specific but I know that the reef is way more shallow there than in the area you are asking about. In my opinion it is a very bad area for spearfishing on a cheap. Try to get in touch with this guy: https://www.facebook.com/CANFIELDLR but don't expect cheap hunting.
