Hello everyone,

I'm planning a spearfishing trip to the East Coast of Mexico in May. Looking for fellow spearos there right now... If anybody is going to be there at that time or has some friends down there I'd really appreciate some company. My max. working depth is 25 meters. Does anyone have an idea what it would cost to get a small boat with a local captain to take me to some of the more remote and deeper spots, especially on Cozumel?

Cheers

I went to Mexico twice. My experience was miserable, possibly due to my limited abilities. In some places (Playa del Carmen, Puerta Aventuras last year) you need to go comfortably to 30 meters to shoot groupers or permits. The boat would be expensive, about $200 for 3-4 hours. I went in February of this year to a place wihere the reef is shallow (15 meters) and it was seaweed everywhere and rather big waves but they say Cozumel does not have the seaweed problem. Many years ago I freedove in Cozumel and there are very strong currents and you have to go reasonably deep. Boat with a knowledgeable captain is a must. Also verify that Cozumel is not a protected area. Good luck!

I would skip the spearfishing and check out the Cenotes.

Angelita, Zapote, Casa cenote, and about a thousand other cenotes you can freedive. Check out out one of the few schools there and join a training/fun dive with them. You wont regret it!

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately I couldn't find enough time for the trip this time but I will consider your thoughts when I actually go there :)
