Anyone from this area interested in spearfishing / freediving, or who regularly dive, contact me. I dive every weekend the whole weekend and most of the time once during the week as well. Either send a PM or email me.

Hi,

I don't know if you would be interested but I am hoping to go on a holiday to south africa this year. It would not be for a few months though but it would be good to meet up with someone who knows of good diving spots. I am interested in freediving and practice in a pool regularly but would also like to find a good PADI scuba place to do a couple more qualifications.
I have relatives in Durban I can stay with. I know that is a long way from Cape Town but I think my parents have friends there as well who would put me up.
It's just an idea at the moment. What is the weather/water like in CT in June/July?

Hamish.

CT in Winter

Water ... cold to very cold. Expect anything from 6 C to 14 C (If you're lucky)
Weather - crappy. Rainy, cold, wet, misty .... well crappy diving weather anyway !!

I still dive during winter months, but not as much as in summer. Durban, however, would be pretty nice in wintertime. Water would be warmer, weather not too humid. And you'd be able to get discount rates on scuba courses as well during winter.

Let me know if you'd like to meet some Great Whites and I'll rustle some up for you ....

Contact me when you are on your way to sunny SA.
I will set you up with our Freediving South Africa branch down in Durban.

They should be able to satisfy all your feediving/spearfishing needs.

Cheers for the info SASpearo. I will probably stay in Durban, based on the sound of the Cape Town winter! The sharks sound amazing. It would be cool to see a great white. Quite scary though I would imagine!

Hennie, the freediving club sounds great! Where about in Durban are they? I have family in Glenwood and Escombe. Can't wait to get myself on holiday, I need some sea!

Great White, Great Schmite ...

Look, from my expereince they're just like big cats. I'm not gonna go into that discussion here, but they're pretty docile.

There's quite a few very good cage diving operators around CT and also a town a little north called Gansbaai. But nothing gives you the kick as a freedive of Bellows does ....

Check out www.spearfishingsa.co.za for some good dive spots around Durban. They've also got some info on local conditions etc etc. that might be helpfull.

But come and enjoy the sea sand and sun of sunny SA. You won't regret it.

Riaan C

riaan,

i'm still looking for a deal on a plane ticket later this year. any suggestions for someone coming from the states?

anderson

ps. i'd love to see one of those johnny uptails up close and personal! :D

Flyin'

Well you've basically got two options open to you - Fly to Johannesburg or fly to Cape Town.

Personally I'd fly to Jhb - for the simple reason that more flights land there and it's therefore cheaper. A return flight between Jhb and CT should set you back around R800 to R1500 - depending on Airline used. (aroudn 80 to 150$)

You can also fly to Durban from Jhb for around R500 to to R1000. There's some absolutely great dive spots around Durb's, well worth a check.

Accomodation wouldn't be a problem - "we make organize" ... he he he.

Best deal for tickets would probably be around Sept / Oct as the 'tourist' season only starts around Mid Nov. Water might be a little crappy in Sept though - lots of wind, maybe some rain.

As for the Johnies, they're available anytime. I can introduce you to a couple of the better known ones if you'd like ...

Just don't forget to pack a spare set of underwear and your set of big brass cohone's ...
