Hi all.

I would just like to introduce myself to you all in Cape Town. Ryan Johnson, a marine biologist by trade, spent the last 8 years up in Gansbaai and Mosselbaai doing my doctorate on Great whites. Now here in Cape Town and im looking to advance from spearfishing and diving into freediving. Any help or suggestions to hook up with people and get into this would be great.

Thanks

Ryan

What a awesome weekend we had at Jongensfontein... a quick report.
Left CT on wednesday morning and arrived to a distessed choppy sea so we set up camp and went to the store for some refreshments. Thursday the westerly wind cleared the sea a bit but still no divable waters friday we went for a shore dive in very murky 2 to 3m viz which stayed on for the supposed saturday comp so we moved it to sunday to see if conditions will improve a bit more as it got a bit better each day. So we basically spent everyday partying from Wednesday to saturday... Sunday we woke up to amazingly flat water with a slow rolling 3m swell so we went out to call the comp and upon arrival at the blinder had a game on call from all 6 boats in the water. What a awesome day of spearing in 4-5m viz with water temps ranging from 19 to 21 deg. I started my comp with a 1.4ish kg parrot and then added a 1.9ish red roman and a 1.3kg bream. My highlight of the comp must have been when I missed a shot at a gallie out at odendals point from the surface while swimming closer to shore in 8m viz as I pulled up my spear and set it back to start loading a whole school of probably 30 to 40 leeries appeared so suddenly I had to look twice before I realised what they were. I loaded my gun with the bands crossing each other in the excitement, unloaded and reloaded while the school was making slow circles around me on their third pass I was ready for a shot and also started to notice them moving on as I tried to line up a shot on the biggest fish I have ever encountered while spearing but they were moving to fast and in a attempt not to spook the whole school I opted for a slower swimming 3.7kg leerie swimming in the back of the school, which I stoned with a head shot. I got back in the boat with suct a adrenalin rush and big smile I had to wait a while to get back into the water. We moved on to another spot down the coast and I ended my day with another parrot in the 1.5kg range. All in all it was a awesome day with big cracker landed and some big yellow tail and also a few red stump. The perfect day of diving to end the perfect weekend of partying :)

And now for my version
Thursday got sick, but partied a bit
Friday was very sick stayed in bed the whole day and partied at night with DT
Saturday: sat in bed sulking why DT and them tried to go for a shore dive
Sunday: Went out with the boats with water on the eardrum, a sinus infection and every possible channel in my head blocked. Dived to 9m and it felt as if my head was going to implode. So i sat on the boat the rest of the day trying to catch a tan. (Couldnt even do that it seems)

Now its Tuesday and im still freakin sick. But not partying hoping to recover so i can at least make a dive by this weekend. So no spearing for me but it was a kewl party :) not a complete waste, But man the water was good and the fish was plenty. Im definitly going back next month to exact my revenge on some fishies.

Yea bous in the white t with 2 beers in his hands, Im in the yellow t in the 5th pic. The rest of the people are guys from our club and wifes, girlfreinds and mates that joined in the weekend... :)

Looks like it was a very cool w.end!! I did a quick shorie yesterday from near the oceana, swimming out towards moullie. Water was ok in places, and dirty in places with swarms of box jellies, but saw very little.
When I got back, a duck-load of spearo's was leaving the slip, but it seemed as if they stopped just off the Athena at Moullie, not sure what they found.
If I had a boat, I personally would have gone to North paw, or looked a bit deeper?? But then, I do'nt have a boat. :D

Hey there Faizy welcome back from your long dormancy :) Nice catch by the way, yes you did really miss out this weekend, it was probably the most perfect weather there Ive seen in a very long time. I had to get at least some points on the board this year as Ive allready got that little len jones book and wont know what to do with another rofl . Covert the people here will think we only go away for weekends to sit around the fire and drink beer and talk sh*t all weekend, seriously it is a pity I didnt take a pic of that it never even occured to me. I bet ya the guys cleaning the bins each morning were very happy to see us go home, the bottle stores on the other hand... rofl

Hey i thought drinking and braaing was the main activities..... my mistake :P anyhoo yeah im sure that the bottle stores will soarly miss the 2 -4 daily trolleys stacked with booz leaving their racks. I think the stilbaai economy might have taken a bit of a crash after we left. But like i said i might shoot up for a weekend next month, depending on the weather and viz. You know do my part and revitalize the stilbaai economy again. And hey Faizy :friday

Howzit dudes
I didn't know there's a spearfishing shop in melkbos. Damn, how long has it been there? I must say the place has really expanded in the last few years. I guess when I go there again the town will have it's own airport and ice rink.
Hope you all find some diveable waters this weekend...cheers
