CO2 tables not challenging enough?

Hi,

I'm relatively new to the world of freediving and I'm actually doing a project at the moment, where I'm trying to find out how I can improve my dry breath holding time within the month of August.

Now my personal best was 1 minutes 40 seconds on the 1st of August. Since then I've been doing CO2 tables with a hold time of 50-60 seconds and a breath time of 2 minutes, decreasing to 15 seconds within 8 rounds. What I do is breathe in for 3 seconds, out for 6 seconds and at the end of my breath time, I take a really deep breath (lower lung first, then upper lung). I hardly feel any diaphragm contractions within the first 6 seconds and even the last two rounds are not that challenging.

Am I doing these tables wrong? Am I not supposed to take a really deep breath before holding?
 
Extend the hold-times if you're feeling it's not challenging enough.

I suggest the following method ( from Apnea Academy)

Practice the abdominal ventilation

(Breath in for 4 s, breath out for 8 s) …5 times

(Breath in for 4 s, apnea for 4 s, breath out for 8 s) …4 times

(Breath in for 4 s, apnea for 4 s, breath out for 8 s, apnea for 4 s) …3 times

Afterward, 3 normal ventilation and a last deep breath in to start the C02 table.

During the apnea close your eyes and say mentally, very slowly ( I’m… totally… relaxed… I’m… totally… relaxed… etc) or sing a song, always, mentally very slowly.

So that way, you should improve your apneas

In the beginning, rapid increases in breathold ability is common, which may be the reason why your CO2 table is not challenging anymore.

Retest your max hold (repeat test at least 3 times, so your dive reflex activates), then construct a new table. Keep retesting every 1-2 weeks for the first 1-2 months, until you get a more accurate feel of your ability.
Concentrate on relaxing during the tables, and remember that while the first few holds should be easy, as the breathing phase shortens near the end it should be challenging with lots of contractions.
