Competitors protesting

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
i think people are getting side tracked and dishing dirt on people within this sport
i felt this sport and the people within it were all realy close knit and it disturbs me that people who train with eachother could be so vindictave towards eachother. for the sake of a podium place . please , sort it out
and as for his/hers who evers previous test failures / leave them in the past
as this sport grows testing will become more stern, cheats will be caught and dealt with .

Jay, it all falls under rules and ethics, which is the heart of the original post. Even with the tight group that freedivers are, you can get the rogue person that makes you stop and think, why would they do that?? When I mentioned positive tests, I meant it as a generic statement, based more on things I have seen with MMA fights.

Using protests as a strategy is ethically wrong imo. Same for using a performance enhancing drug. Dive your dive and if you feel an in correct call was made towards your dive, then question the judge about what they saw and resolve the issue calmly

On Sietas specifically, since it was brought up and to allow for another view. I thought I remember reading a thread talking about Sietas' positive test(s) and they were thought to be things that would actually hurt him if he was taking them for his performances? Which leads to another question which I'll find a better place to ask....

Both substances (beta-blocker and bronchodilator) would be significantly performance enhancing. A beta-blocker especially.

However in the case of J.M.Pradon, pseudoephedrine is harmful to your performance in any large quantity.

i feel like i ve had a go at some one now IL diver sorry if you think this i just feel uncomfotable talking about people.
what was the explanation behind the beta blockers findings , it would be interesting to know

Sietas failed at least two doping tests...
Thanks for the info Eric. Googling it up, I found also another famous freediver's name mentioned. It would be good of course to hear various angles and facts on this... But I realize it should be the subject of another post.

About the protests of one athlete (or team) against another, my first reaction is that it is not very ethical. I have seen myself (and heard of) many instances in which judges made mistakes or did not use the same criterium in similar cases. We have to accept that judges are humans, and that like in most other sports mistakes can happen. Even very nasty ones. Best would be to show the video to the judge privately, and hope they learn from that. In general one should not try to have points removed from a fellow athlete who had the genuine good luck of not being seen while committing a penalty.

If there was an extreme case (such as a judge obviously acting to favor a particular athlete or nation), then it might be different. Let's face it, people go to a world championship spending money, time, and long preparations. If you are not top, it doesn't matter if you end up 10th or 15th place. But to be second because the first one put his mouth in the water and got a white card, this would annoy me seriously.

I was not in Sharm, so I do not know how serious were the issues.

I never meant it to be directed towards a particular person when I brought up tests. I honestly did not know how many positive tests had come up. I knew of one by Sietas, I figured there were more positive tests by other divers.

I don't think you've had a go at anyone man, it's all a discussion. I'm not harshing on any one person. And from what I'm told some of the stuff the original post was about was done by the USA team in Egypt. That is embarrassing to me that they were involved. Like I said, I like the approach of being accountable for yourself.

I'm still not clear on how judging at a competition is done. Is it one main judge that is responsible for determining if the dive was a success? On top of that, is it that judges are not consistent, or is it more that the competitors have their own idea of what should be allowed? i.e. "Hey that person got away with taking a stagger step that looked like a samba. If I would have stayed 15 seconds longer I could have done the same thing, but I was clean!"

Reactions: Erik
Sietas failed at least two doping tests for different drugs at different times. The 1st time was the beta-blocker and the 2nd time was some sort of bronchodilator, but I can't recall the name. The 2nd failed test was never publicized.

The first was later corrected by the lab. The second was not Sietas failing a doping test BUT a mistake made by AIDA in reading the test results, since then procedures/communication with WADA lab has been changed! Also a letter was published on AIDA website (and I think several other websites) stating this failure made by AIDA. You can read this story on sebastien website for example (apnea and doping)
