Computer for freediving and scuba?

I was wondering if the oceanic veo 100 or the mares puck wrist computers would also work for freediving.

Not sure about Veo 100 (is it the old model?), but Veo 2 and Veo 3 do have a freediving mode. The previous model did not, as far as I could find when doin the review at APNEA.cz - Freediving Computers. I included also all Mares computers with freedving mode, and do not think the puck has one.

Check out the review - there are over 20 different scuba computers suitable for freedving, so you will certainly find one to your liking.

What special features does a computer have to have to make it suitable for freediving?

It depends what kind of freediving you do. And even then, everyone has slightly different preferences. The most important is proper switching from surface mode to diving mode, and back, which is not always guaranteed at pure scuba computers - they usually use different algorithms and longer timeouts. And they also sometimes show the surface time just in hours and minutes, instead of minutes and seconds. Some of them will lock up when you make couple of freedives, because they will consider a dangerous yo-yo-style diving. And most of them will trigger alarm on every ascent. Usually you can switch to gauge mode, but it has limitations too and is not ideal for freediving.

As for the other features, you best check the detailed pages of couple of the computers in the review, to see what such a computer offers.
