OK so I've been breathing up to lower my heart rate before getting into the water but when I'm under and/or lining up a shot like an old war horse scenting battle my heart rate will go through the roof. so what im asking is does anyone have any tips for underwater heart rate control?

I would think that it would be perfectly natural for the heart rate to rise when excited about taking a shot at a nice fish.

But how do you know that it races? I have no idea what my heart rate is while underwater.

Controlled breathingis a big part of regulating your heart rate regulation. What I suggest doing is, breath in for 6 seconds, pause for1-2, then exhale twice long as your intake. I like to put my tounge on the back of my front teeth and make a hissing sound so I know I'm doing it properly. You want to research diaphramatic breaon YouTube and check that tout as well.

it feels like all the air in my lungs has been sucked out (even tho i haven't released my breath hold) in a matter of seconds and i assume that's due to my heart rate increasing.

I think everyone will need a little more information to help you with this.
Here is a test to try.
Start on your knees.
Now exhale as much as you can as you bend over until your laying on your legs and your head is at your knees.
If you know how to reverse pack, do that a few times. If not, just try spitting the air out of your mouth a few times.
Now, while still holding your breath, straighten up.
Suck your stomach in and spit the air out of your mouth.
Release your stomach and do it a few more times. Keep holding your breath.
If you do it right, you should have got most of the air out of your lungs.
Relax your stomach. Is this a similar feeling to what you have been experiencing?
Oh, you can breath now.

i have been doing dynamic apnea training and i think it was an co2 reflex cause the effect its getting less and less as i progress with the exercises.
