Cornwall 2008.

I love putting edits like this together.. Unfortunately the camera ran out on my final dive and I missed some of the best footage of the trip which was a bugger.. having said that the "mega herd" was a simply unbelievable experience.. almost intimidating at times!! As for the urchins.. BLOODY HUGE!

In answer to your questions Scott...
-the dives were reasonably shallow.. probably 25ft max... my holds are about 1 min tops.. need to stop smokin!
-I had no licence but kept a low profile.. spearfishing is illegal in most areas so you will get your equipment nabbed by the Policia if you get "caught|".. there are some areas that it is allowed (away from the tourist beaches) and that was where I fished most.
-I had no problems getting the guns out there.. put them in my board bag!

All in all the best trip yet.. going back for sure to find dem Groupers!! :blackeye

Nice clips. Pease do not remind me again that you scored warm waves whilst I was freezing my but in the beach car park.
 
Very nice kernowsniper. Great vid and great diving. Sorry to sound a little negative though but the clips with you filming yourself diving down made me feel very uneasy!! That was a loaded speargun you had pointing at your shoulder area. Safety catch or not you are playing a dangerous game. The only true safety is an unloaded gun!! As i said, i hate to sound down about such a good vid but i don't really want to hear about one of our own getting shafted, so to speak!!

Great news on the surf too. You didn't miss much here. See you in the water sometime! I will look for the guy shivering with a tan:)

Fair do's and thanks for the advice Gutshot.. I had done a filmed dive with the gun unloaded but the rubber kept waving around in front of the camera.. no excuse.. I just wanted to see how it looked with it hooked up.. and I guess in turn could have kebabbed myself.. but luckily not. :)

What fish is this?

Here's a question for everyone out there: WHAT FISH IS THIS?

-It was fresh when found
-It's about 6ft long, 1.5ft deep but not that thick as you can see.
-The fin running along it's back has red stripes in it
-Body is silvery.
-The eyes are on either side of its body and very large - so it must swim vertically and not a flat fish
-The mouth is like that of a fish
It has no tail either but doesn't look much like an eel due to the highly flattened cross section of it's body.
-The THING was found a week ago near Flushing by a friend but sadly only took one picture of it.

Big shrug from me, haven't a clue - what a find though. Cornwall always turns up the wierd ones.... Is it April 1st?
 
Hellish, it looks like that radioactive spill from plymouth area has made it's way around here!!
 
Well have got my old marine Biology text books out and have come up with a Dealfish Trachypterus sp. dont think its arcticus but pic is not great! possibly Trachypterus trachypterus
will have a look on fish base.
 
google imaged it and it looks like a dealfish weird looking thing, I wonder what it tastes like :)

According to Wheeler's Key To The Fishes of Northern Europe it feeds on deep-water fishes in the 100-500 fathom range, including squids and shrimps. It is labelled "quite useless as food" and probably a little out of your depth Scott!

Great work there tecdave - thanks. I knew I could count on the highly tuned and inquisitive brains of fellow spearos. :friday I've found this picture link of one in more detail - a weird and wonderful creature indeed.

Not a problem!! I knew that degree would come in handy one day!!!
Do you know what happened to the fish? The museums are always happy to take unusual species like this, just call them up and they will usually sort out the transport.
 
Anyone going in over the weekend? Weather looks promising down here for Sunday. May get in for a freedive somewhere if the vis looks ok. My GF is far keener than I but then again she's the one that seems to attract all the fish. I need to get her a gun!

The guy who used to run a local tackle shop used to always get his wife and daughter to bait his hooks. Quiet a few anglers believe that a scent of a woman attracts fish (having said that I do live in Devon and locals also believe that Gannets go blind from diving for fish and then can't feed and so die... A Gannet never dies from old age!!) :head

It may be worthwhile towing one along with your bouy next time you go hunting :)

It's no joke, on more than one occasion when we have been in together I have seen sizeable Bass shadowing her. It is as if they are using her as a human shield, conscious of the fact that I will not take the shot. Last time we were at Kennack Sands I was getting my gear ready and she came running out of the water shouting about an encounter she just had with a monster Turbot-2ft wide-flatfish-thingy. After that I did not see squat (except Badlander with a nice string of Mullet!!) . Happy days.
 
Been in twice earlier this week, north coast on monday, terrible didnt see squat.

South coast on tues, not bad vis, saw some mullet but nothing big and got a nice turbot.
 
Strewth mate - a "nice big turbot" now that would win you the FOM competition!
If you have any pics I would love to see them - anyway well done.
