Most guys wearing a 5mm suit use between 15 & 22lb. I weight 13 stone with little fat & use 20lb for shallow water & a little less if i am after flatfish.

Hmm ya guernsey holiday...sounds good...but not this year, not sure when ill be coming over yet! Shot for the pm badlander, some great photos! i honestly didnt know it got so clean, very happy about that! I gotta get a shorter gun i suppose, otherwise everything else i got is ok......i got a rabitech stealth 115cm too long?
nice website scott thanks! hoping i dont need jabs....cant see anywhere on the net where it says that i do....

I'm pretty much the same as foxfish in that i use 20lb of weight and i use a two piece 5mm suit.If you're going to use a surf suit it'll be less.I'd just put a small amount on first time and put more on until i felt more comfortable.
I got my weights from the little dive shop in penryn.
The falmouth area has great vis at the moment,i'd get in there before the winds go south.

Have driven about today to visit some past spearing spots; Polperro, Talland Bay, Downderry, Plaidy - sea conditions looked fine and from higher vantage points the viz looked great, made me itchy to get in! Spoke to some of the commercial boys at the quayside in Looe and they said that recent catches had been rubbish; even the local fish restaurants are bemoaning the lack of produce! Was supposed to take glass-bottomed trip around Looe Island and Polperro but had to put it off! Off to Rick Steins restaurant tomorrow for lunch, hopefully he is fully-stocked rofl

Thankfully the honeymoon and Rick Stein experience is thanks to generous family contributions! I went there 10 years ago and had a brilliant meal, hopefully he won't let us down tomorrow. :)

Had a dive on the Lizard on friday down at Coverack.Bit of movement and vis wasn't too good, perhaps 1-3m.Once again failed to shoot my gun at anything and saw just small pollock and big wrasse.Didn't seem as cold and spent most of the time just working on my bottom times which are pretty poor after the winter.

The weather and sea conditions have gone downhill in 24 hrs, in fact there were guys trying to surf today off Looe beach! The locals tell me it should clear up over weekend so hopefully I can still get the glass-bottomed boat tour in before we leave! Went to see Jack Bray Sports in Looe who used to do spearing gear back in the glory days when the News of The World used to sponsor one of the BSA competitions at Looe, but only sells Angling gear now! No spearing gear at Looe Divers either but at least they are not 'anti' spearfishing.

I am fairly new to the sport and I have a few questions:

Is Talland Bay a good spot? I google earthed it and thought to myself that it looked good. (I dived it and thought it was pretty good although i only saw big wrasse).

I train in a pool and do breast stroke, underwater. I swim flat-out with a bottom time of a minute and cover a distance of 33m (no fins, wearing board shorts). Is this a good start?

Final question: does anyone spearo from Plymouth and want a buddy?

Well,I've never dived Talland bay but they used to run comps there i believe so i'd imagine it's regarded as a fairly good spot.Like you said, sure looks good on google earth.
As for your pool work, seems like you have a high ability level which will keep you in good stead for yopur spearing.

I dived out near Portscatho yesterday morning and saw a few dogfish and wrasse...STILL no shootables.....there was a seal out too and even he didn't seem to be having any luck.Vis was 3m at best
Thinking about popping down to a spot i used to take the boat to but it'll take some drive and a fair walk but i know it to be an excellent bass spot.I'll post a report later if i go.Conditions look cracking today.

Just got back.....As predicted it was just hellish finding it in the car, then the trek was pretty harsh too,45 minutes of footpaths and jumping hedges, gates, electric fences etc....Anyway,got there in the end...Conditions were sweet,no wind blue sea, sunny and great vis.Saw plenty of mullet straight off the bat but knowing how hard the walk was with my kit,i wasn't going to shoot just anything.
Ventured out to the point to get in the tidal current and saw my first bass of the year....it was a mear spears length from my tip and all but on my stringer but alas, for some reason i'd put the safety on!..Tw@! i thought....and off he swam.Saw plenty more mullet...loads.and then found an abandoned crab pot......no marker bouy, rope was severed and it was pretty well wedged under a ledge, however,it was stacked full of crabs, big juicy crabs but i didn't have a net bag.But i was wondering what the deal is there,it kinda felt like stealing and i wondering if anyone else has been in that situation?I'm heading back down there tomorrow so i might take a couple of net bags and crab up.
To top it all off,as i started the long walk back up the hill,i noticed some porpoises out in the bay and suddenly they were everywhere,at least 4-5 big groups spread out and it looked like they chasing fish.Beautiful sight.
Backbreaking day with no results, but the best morning i've had in ages.

Feck! What a great day Badlander. I sometimes have the safety issue but I think it gets knocked on by accident during the swim/dive phase??... That was one lucky bass! I would say those crabs are for grabs if the pot isn't buoyed and it's wedged...sounds like lost gear...
