Had my first north coast dive on tuesday at Portreath.Looked pretty good from the cliff but vis was 1-2 when you got in there,wind got up too and with the tide on the way in it got a little lumpy out there.Just saw some wrasse.
Dived down on the south yesterday back at the long walk spot.Stayed in for 3 hours and saw exactly no bass,not even a mullet.....a fair few spiders though.In the last week i've walked a total of 12 miles to and from this spot with a 35lb rucksack on my back and not even had a bass to show for it.I'll be diving spots with car parks on the beach from now on.Again,vis was pure HD,at least 10m and glorious.I'd imagine most of the falmouth area is right now.

Looking forward to getting started again this year, glad to see badlander doing the surveilance around the coastal hotspots - I've enjoyed reading your posts! Unlucky on the bass so far though eh?
Hope to be getting in in the next few weeks when work calms down, (secondary teacher - gcse time - aggggghhh!!!!) but in the meantime I'm hoping someone out there can help me with a few queries???..
Going to portugal (Albufera region) at the end of May and I'm contemplating taking my speargun. Have any of you ever speared in Portugal? What sort of fish am I likely to find? Is it legal?!!! What are the regs for taking the speargun on the plane in luggage etc etc
Any answers to the above would be great thanks!

Don't know much about spearing in Portugal,but i do know two friends who live and spear out there,one of whom got a nice 13lb bass a couple of years back.Probably worth your while taking the gun then!
Unlucky with the bass?...Bloody right,i missed a sitter yesterday,again a surface shot on a nice size bass,one of a pair who were just sitting in the weed.I just looked in pure shock when the bass just swam off minus my spear.I've just changed by band diameter and shaft so thats the excuse i'm using.However,had no problem hitting a fast moving mullet on a dive.There's just no justice.
Anyway,mullet went to a mate who loves them and it might encourage him to finally get his gun out this year.
Vis was cracking and it was like (apart from the temp) a summers day...Loads of mullet,those two lucky bass,makerel,loads more pollock and hefty wrasse along with loads of sand eel and assorted bait fish.Heading down there later hopefully.

Cheers for the reports Badlander. I will start my cornish season weekend of the 3rd. I am gagging to try my secret spot and get into that crystal cornish water! I am hoping not to relive my double figure bass, point blank miss I had end of last year. Still traumatised by it....

Ok i went out today for the first time at swanpool crystal clear water . But i had trouble loading the speargun im about 2 inchs of the notch and ive got brusing were it was just below Peks (Man Boobs). Im not weak but not to strong .Help?? . But did see a flounder and pollock .
I remember feeling your pain when you said about that miss on the biggun!My two misses have been haunting me.I hope the vis holds,we're due a few days of strong east going round to north east winds.Might stir the sea up some and reduce the viz.Hope not though.
Had a few dives lately,viz has been just amazing,almost too good.
Seen a lot of mullet,one bass in the distance last night and all the other usual suspects including some makerel that checked me out but didn't present a shooting opportunity.Still waiting for my first bass,my first was (i think) the 15th of April last year.So tomorrow i'm cleared for a dawn attack on a hopeful spot.
As for loading that gun,how big is it?I normally rest the butt on my weight belt to load it to the first notch then move it up to my chest pad to move it to the second notch.An advantage of a spearing suit is the loading pad which is similar to a surf suit knee pad.As for the pain,you could try getting an old flip flop and putting that down your suit to reduce the pressure of loading.Like anything though,you'll get used to after a while.A good tip for swanpool is to head right past 3 makerels until you hit the string weed,a prime mullet spot.From there up the point is a likely spot for bass.Should you feel like taking a stroll (or a long swim) the bay between swanpool and maenporth can be very productive on it's day.

Badlander, How many weeks did Bass differ for you last year between North and South coast? Do you reckon they show on the south side of your penisular before the North, or is it choice of spot / frequency that you dive on the southside?

I usually find that i'm forced by conditions to fish the south coast earlier than i can fish the north so it'll always the south that i'll get my first bass at.Although last year the north coast seemed to fish a lot better for me.
As for my spearing frequency,i've just finished at the place i was working so i've had a fair bit of free time so as long as i work on the house/garden and keep everyone sweet at home,i can manage to slip off for a dive.It won't last though!
Anyway,my early morning fish the other day wasn't so good.Saw my first cuttle fish though so not all bad.

Not actually been in spearfishing yet but have just finished rigging my new kayak for spearing. Fully set up with a handheld GPS, fishfinder, speargun mounts, hatches for other saftey gear, etc. Had concerns about losing kit should it capsize while leaving/ entering the kayak but thats all under control. Spearflap and myself have been taking them out to get to grips with what we can/ can't do. I did have my first dive today out from St Mawes minus the speargun. Just a quick look for scollops but didn't find any. Was managing 7m very comfortably mooching around in the silt. Anyway it was a wee bit cold diving in a 5/4/3 surf suit which is 3 years old so i was not in for long. Managed a few dives which was fun.
As its all ready now i wait for the next time it looks good to launch it. I already have some good looking spots marked down which are only accessable by boat and now i have a fishfinder to use there are a few offshore reefs on the north coast which i am aiming for which don't break the surface. I know from boat fishermen that these reefs are loaded with bass. I have the GPS marks so fingers crossed.

A Perception Freedom. Really nice and easy to paddle. So far we have had them out on some fairly rough conditions, Well rougher than i'd be out there Spearing, and they handly well. I will post a pic in the next few days when i get my arse in gear.
Have you any pics mate? according to this Perception Freedom Sit On Top kayak for Sale the yak weighs 54lb?
Have the option of heading out to the south coast this Thursday. Had fancied cornwall but the swell and wind is currently forcast to be s.west, with a bit of swell.
What do you reckon our best chances will be on the south coast. - Cornwall, Devon or Dorset?
